DE, DT, or CB?

It has been said by many on the board that with the 1st round pick we get for Pep we should address one of these three positions. I totally agree. Mayock's top prospects for the three positions currently are:

Defensive ends

Rk Player School

1 Robert Ayers Tennessee

2 Tyson Jackson LSU

3 Everrette Brown Florida State

4 Paul Kruger Utah

5 Michael Johnson Georgia Tech

Defensive tackles

1 B.J. Raji Boston College

2 Peria Jerry Mississippi

3 Evander 'Ziggy' Hood Missouri

4 Ron Brace Boston College

5 Fili Moala Southern California

Cornerbacks

1 Malcolm Jenkins Ohio State

2 *Vontae Davis Illinois

3 Darius Butler Connecticut

4 Alphonso Smith Wake Forest

5 *D.J. Moore Vanderbilt

*notes underclassmen with special eligiblity

I think that whatever pick we get, that the needs of other teams should leave some of these guys available for us. I don't follow college a great deal, and am wondering who some of you who do follow college think we should go with. Stated another way. Who will be left for us?

If we can get a huge DT like kemo I'd say take him before an end - but we need quickness on the end spots bad. I wouldn't mind seeing how marshall does as lucas' replacement IF we cut him for cap room before drafting one in the first two rounds. We could def get Everette Brown with green bays pick...

It depends on where in the draft we pick as to who's available in the first round, it also depends on exactly what we get for peppers and how our fa pickups look like.

As for actual players. With this I'm assuming we get around the 15-17th draft pick in the first.

1st - Perria Jerry will be probably be there, if not we could go with Vontea davis at CB or Brown at DE. I would go with Jerry myself here.

2nd round - Barwin could be there at our pick, if not I would say Kruger or Ron brace. My pick would be Connor Barwin if he's there.

3rd round - (i'm also assuming we get a third in the peppers deal)

3rda - Alphonso Smith or Johnson if he falls.

3rdb - BPA, I doubt anyone on the above list will still be there and we've at this point filled our holes so I say BPA. we might be able to get another steal like we did last year with Connor.

People don't seem to care so much about this thread. i guess i should have thought about it a little more, and put it in the nfl draft section. i'd move it if i could. oh well.

Well you did point out the 3 most immediate needs. Now it just comes down to BPA per usual. In the early rounds, that formula has worked pretty well for us over the last several years...

IF we get a high enough pick I want the best available QB (either Sanchez or Stafford) and if those guys are gone then I want either Malcolm Jenkins or Vontae Davis. If those two corners are gone then we should trade down. None of those DTs are even on the same level that Dorsey and Ellis were last year...they are OVERRATED. The DE class is really weak this year as well. Gotta go with BPA which actually as crazy as it sounds might be WR this year with guys like Harvin and possibly Maclin hanging around. I have a feeling unless we get one of those two QBs, Davis, or Jenkins in the first round I'm not going to be happy.

so you think we should handle our D-line situation in free agency?

I guess i'm in the minority, but I really don't see cornerback as a first round need. Ken Lucas is probably gone, but Richard Marshall gave us great play his first couple seasons. He regressed some in 2008, but I still think he's capable of great things.

If we fix the line, our cornerbacks are fine as they are right now. You don't get a pass rush you put them out on an island and bad things happen. Pass rush and they can have success. I'm not part of the group that thinks Lucas has lost it, but he can be burned when there's no rush. I do think he may end up a cap casualty without a serious restructure however...

I know I said before that CB is one of the top concerns, but that is only because it's a weak class in DL, both in FA and the draft...

    • Cooter, Kurb, others have passed on to glory….  Praise be.
    • Oh good for them! Hope this is the start of a long happy time in their lives here.
    • There was no reason to believe in either Cam or Jake as a top tier elite QB before those seasons either. Cam was an "athletic" QB in most people's minds and his passing skills were open for debate. And there was a bit to that as he was still trying to get that massive power in his arm tamed to be able to put some touch on his passes. And then, he did it. Missiles became bombs, the firing lanes became points of finesse. Cam grew up and leveled up, while still retaining the ability and drive to truck people whenever he wanted. And Jake... no one freaking believed in Jake except Jake himself. He got, and let's be honest with this, one chance in a losing game to make something out of his career. And he rose to the occasion like some kind of mythical hero and continued to do so for the season. He became a true leader for the team, and his gunslinger capabilities rehabbed Moose's career and created Smitty as a force in the league. Smitty went from a barker to a biter. But no one believed in Jake going in. And they trashed him on his way out. Now Bryce... who knows? I've seen some improvement. Maybe he finds his footing. His teammates seem to love and respect him and that means a lot. The game should be moving at his speed now. He has weapons available to him and maybe a defense that doesn't just roll over by the third quarter. And his coach seems to be moving this team in the right direction. Could he do it? It's up to him, if he can find the magic like Jake and Cam did. But don't doubt this, magic is really, really hard to find.
