JR 'Puts Newton on the Clock'

The most famous piece of furniture in Charlotte, and perhaps the NFL, is a clock at the home of Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson.

When Cam Newton visited Richardson April4, he asked only two questions. The first was, "Is that the clock?"

How did Newton know?

"Everybody in the NFL knows about the clock," Richardson says.

Richardson and I talk Friday afternoon. We sit at a table on his patio. In front of us is a vast lawn as smooth and lush as an Augusta National green.

Richardson did not select Newton on Thursday with the No.1 pick in the NFL draft. General manager Marty Hurney did. But Richardson could have vetoed the selection.

So the April 4 meeting was not without import.

Richardson is 74. Newton will turn 22 May 11. The younger repeatedly called the older sir.

"Are you calling me sir because you're trying to impress me?" Richardson asked.

"I'm calling you sir because that's the way I was raised," Newton said.

Richardson said he didn't want to talk about the past.

Newton thanked him.

If the Panthers draft you, you'll be part of our family, Richardson said. We'll move forward.

Richardson wants to move forward. Last season, the Panthers went 2-14. There was infighting within the organization. There was criticism from once-respectful fans.

this one SHOCKED me:

Back on the patio, Richardson says: "I'm not a choirboy. I've never said I was. And I don't want a roster of 53 choirboys. I told Jeremy Shockey (Carolina's new non-choirboy tight end), 'Don't change your personality. It'll be good for the team. I could do without the tattoos, though.'"

My favorite part, and the part most telling to me as a Panthers fan:

The door to the patio opens and Richardson is told he has a telephone call. It's NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. He excuses himself.

When Richardson returns, I ask: Do you like Newton?

"A lot," he says. "A lot.

Is this question from how Peppers did us?

Richardson asked Newton what mattered most - being drafted No. 1, or becoming a Panther.

"No, sir, I want to play for the Carolina Panthers," Newton said.

"You don't want to play in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, some place like that?" Richardson asked.

"No sir," said Newton. "I would be very happy to come here and make my career here."

    • That he gets worse while at the same time getting more exposure is just typical.
    • And, yes, I've been a slow boil, but watching continually watching shitty displays of football for weeks has me frustrated.
    • Bryce just didn't maximize Hunter Renfrow's skills. ***rant incoming*** But this isn't just about Bryce Young mistiming passes to Renfrow so bad that he's going to get Renfrow killed or hurt, this is also about incompetentence by Dave Canales. Renfrow can still play. He's putting DBs in a blender out there---making them play twister at the top of routes to keep up with him, and dumb Dave has the nerve to cut him. How about putting Hunter in the best position to help the damned offense by appreciating his skill set, DC? You're letting Bryce's apparent inability to make an accurate throw, or at least his timidity to push the ball down the damned field cloud your judgment and miscalculate talent---or maybe just miss on talent just as much as Bryce misses passes due to playing pussified football. It's fúcking unacceptable.  Speaking of misjudgment, I don't know if it's Dan Morgan or Canales, but Eijiro Evero is not the business at DC. I have said a few times that his scheme is not conducive to run-stopping efficiency. Hell, and after watching some clips of plays, now I absolutely know why. The gaps are at least half open before the play even fúcking starts. You are setting the opposition's RBs up for success with too much damned space at the line and in the second level. If our guys are taken out in these areas---at the line and in the second level---then the defense is screwed because it must rely on the safeties to cover too much ground to make the tackle. At least put Ransom in who is motivated to seek and destroy if you're going to effectively leave the safeties on an island.  And speaking of rookies, get our two new defensive ends more snaps to see if we can't generate more of a pass rush. For all the good the continued sorry display of defense that you're putting out for fan's to see (Ejiro, Dave and Dan), you may as well get the rookies generously involved. Fúck that money we gave second-rate (maybe second-rate) vets, we need a damned spark getting after the QB. Watch it, it's just another breakdown of the sh¡t we were subjected to last week. I say this with all respect: Fúck you, Dave! Fúck you, Dan! Learn how to run a fúcking franchise. Maximize the players, regardless of what you think you're supposed to do by the book. Cut the dead weight before another season is lost and fans lose interest in September. EE is "Ew!" Or for emphasis "EEw!" /end rant
