Clausen's Still Fighting

uhm ... what? Why?

I just want Clausen to decide what happens to his jersey number on his own and I personally don't want to kick Clausen off the team just yet.

What does that have to do with Newton starting?

I don't think rookies are usually ready to start from day 1 but if Newton is, then good!

Because, I haven't heard you or anyone else for that matter say that you hope Newton, our number one overall draft pick do well. I want Clausen to do well for the sole reason of trade value because the Panthers could use him as trade bait to a team that is looking for a quarterback in hopes of securing future draft picks or a player. However, I am not wishing Clausen luck because if after this year, I only think one of them can be on the roster unless one of them is ok with being a back up and if that’s the case, then that means the Panthers whiffed on last years draft and this years draft because one of them is ok with not being great. I would rather both of them do well and one them get traded for compensation (preferably Clausen because Newton was the # overall pick).

then you read too much into my posts and completely ignore others. PLENTY of posters here, myself included, have said they hope Newton does well! I am pretty sure that was like the first post I made in the "Cam Newton #1 thread." Doing well does not mean we think he should automatically start as a rookie, though. Some of us want him to develop on the bench and maybe take over mid season, or earlier if the coaches say he is ready. If that happens to be week 1, so be it, but it seems unlikely. This is basically the opposite of wanting him to fail when you believe, like I do, that a quarterback does best when he sits on the bench for some time before he plays.

this is confusing. You want him to do well but don't wish him luck because you don't want him on the roster.

Sure, the best way to get Clausen off the team ASAP is for him to fall flat on his face in training camp.

On the other hand, what might be best for the Panthers is if he does extremely well this year. Just because he does well and holds the starting job does not mean Cam Newton was a waste. There are things Cam can do that Jimmy simply will never be able to. Let Cam sit and learn if he can.

Not winning a starting job in his first year (or hell even second) doesn't mean he was a failure or we whiffed on the pick. Newton was drafted as the long term quarterback of this team - if he gets in and wins immediately, good, but if he doesn't, that's not the end of the world, either.

Some of you are just brain dead. Why would you NOT want Clausen competing? Why would you NOT want him beating out Cam? You think Cam will progress more rapidly if all competition is eliminated? Do you think Cam is owed the job now? If Clausen plays well, we benefit in many ways. It buys time for Cam to develop (by the way, don't you think Cam should stay in Charlotte to work with players who might help him learn the playbook?) and it gives us a potential Kevin Kolb to trade. Go away, Jimmy? It must be convenient for you to blame everything on Jimmy. I do not have time here to take you back into your childhoods to when you should have learned about common sense and loyalty. If you hate a Panther that much when so much else went wrong with this franchise, there is no help for YOU. If Clausen fights for the job and does it well, we get better as a franchise. We do not OWE Cam or anyone else squat.

That would be nice, but clausen couldnt beat but ryan leaf, thats why people say we need a vet qb to help work with cam.

Probably, because one of quarterback's would be dead, and the other would be in prison for murder.

Clausen got his bell rung in a bar fight, God knows what Cam would do to him.

I meant a boxing ring with gloves and head gear.

Nobody would die but it would be pretty freaking hilarious.

With Newton's size, weight. and reach advantage it'd be embarrassing if he didn't beat Clausen.

So clearly what you're saying is that you want Newton to assault Clausen, cos he's your scapegoat.

To Clausen: Just go away, you are not welcome here.

you have an attention span of a fruit fly, dont you?

if jimmy pans out as a solid QB, you will receive nice trade offers for him. if he fails, you will get a nice draft position again.

and the best thing is: cam can sit and learn for a year, regardless what scenario happens.

I want Cam to have the # he wants.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
