Do we need more cornerback help?

Recommended Posts

I was looking at the Panther's roster and I got to thinking, do we need more cornerback help? I know we just drafted Brandon Hogan, but a fellow huddler posted that he had inside info that the coaches don't think Hogan is ready to start right now.

I personally agree and I think the Panthers need to invest in possibly another cornerback. I think Richard Marshall would be nice to have back if he can be had at the right price or/and another guy that Ron Rivera knows very well: Donald Strickland

From Rotoworld per San Diego Union-Tribune

The Chargers will most likely release CB Donald Strickland once the transactions freeze is lifted.

Strickland is due just $765,000, but is coming off an unremarkable campaign that saw him tally 23 tackles and zero picks while primarily playing nickel back. He'll be replaced by second-round pick Marcus Gilchrist in the slot.

Now, I know Donald Strickland did not have most impressive season under Coach Chico last year, but I think he could be a very productive cornerback as well as a fantastic special teams contributor.

He has decent stats and could allow us to put heavier money elsewhere such as the defensive tackle position as well giving us an opportunity to see if Donald Strickland would bring out the best in Robert McClain and R.J. Stanford.

We could go into training camp and preseason (If there is one) with this depth chart at cornerback.

1. Chris Gamble

2. Richard Marshall (If he is re-signed)

3. Donald Strickland (He would move up to the number two spot if Marshall is not retained)

4. Brandon Hogan

5. Captain Munnerlyn

6. Robert McClain

7. C.J. Wilson

8. R.J. Stanford

Then after the preseason we could cut ties with two or three of the cornerbacks on the roster leaving us with the appropriate yet reliable and still affective depth at this position

What do you guy's think?

Much better options available in Free Agency. With the possibility of Janoris Jenkins in the supplemental draft as well. He's troubled, but he might be too good to pass up.

But do we want to spend the money on a back-up or only short term cornerback when we could push for a more pressing need like defensive tackle and Barry Coefield.

If Marshall leaves then CB is just as much a need as DT.

We don't have many positions to address in FA this year.

Spend some big bucks on CB and Cofield, depth, and we're set for the season.

Jenkins is an interesting option. The Panthers would get him as long as the put in the best round offer. And I think a 3rd would be very reasonalbe.

As for free agents, there are a lot of options. But the bigger question would be is McClain or Stanford possible starters. Captain just doesn't have the size but I think Stanford might end up being an actual starter. Is he ready for that this season? Not sure but do you sign a free agent when you have all of these young guys.

Really this is the same arguement for a lot of positions. IMO, go with your youth. If you are going to build through the draft then you have to develop those picks on the field and not sitting behind free agents. I don't want another season like last year but for the long term success of the team, going through some good growing pains in 2011 may be worth it.

We may not need a lot of CB help. We are moving to a defensive system similar to the Eagles since Sean McDermott is our DC who learned from Jim Johnson. I can see why Brandon Hogan was drafted since he appears to fit this scheme perfectly.

Hogan is a fantastic zone cornerback, and cornerbacks only do zone in Jim Johnson's scheme. The scheme puts a lot of pressure on the front seven to confuse and pressure the offense. Hogan could be a Pro Bowler in this scheme.

Until we have 2 probowl corners, we will always need the help imo. The position also leans well towards special teams. DBs are usually better pure athletes than WRs, they just don't have the hands.
