A little boring now?

RR- We find ways to stay busy. Have to be ready to play when lockout lifts it.

Cam comes in, gets playbook and leaves?

RR- Yeah basically. We've also started assigning regular football tasks to coaches, etc. Making OTA, training camp schedules.

Impact on Cam of lockout?

RR- We talked to him about our philosophy before. We told him things we want him to work on over break, based on what he already does good/needs to work with

First thing we did when we got here was review team, determine needs and the best way to fill them. We addressed some of them during draft, includes franchise QB-which will be an extension of coaching staff on field.

Really enjoyed worked with Don Gregory and his staff.

"Not a ringing endorsement of current staff/QB's?"

Well there were some extenuating circumstances, unfair to judge them, but had that was all we had to review them on.

"Daquan Bowers? Temptation to trade up and take him or move up in 2nd at all?"

RR- Would have been too expensive. DT was being need than DE. Really liked McClain, thought he might be gone by our pick, but he was there already. Also really like Fua.

"Did draft go as you expected?"

RR- It did. When just the way Marty thought. Once board was set Marty didnt think there would be any trades, and the players went off the board just about the spot where he thought they would.

"Could players with a play book make copies and give it to their teammates?"

RR- I don't know if that's legal or not, but teammates can do what they want. Not really sure (laughing at this question)

"Cam and number 2?"

RR- That's up to those players to settle that.

"Cam's potential, who does he remind you of?"

RR- In between Don McNabb and Big Ben. Cam isn't a scrabbling QB. Most of his runs were called plays. Things you saw time and time again was that when he had a called pass play he stayed in the pocket, or when he got flushed his eyes stayed down field and was looking to pass

"Steve Smith, where does that stand?"

RR- Talked to Smith before work stoppage. Just an understanding of who he is, told him will approach situation after lock, will try to accommodate him but will be looking out for the best of the team.

"Designed running plays, doesn't run for longevity in NFL. Where you stand?"

RR- It doesn't, we have to create plays that's best for his talents. Get him situations where he has pass/run option on outside, not just to run. Learn when to slide, get out of bounds. We won't/can't have many designed run plays for him.

"How long play calls?"

RR-Long enough to get the plays out.

Currently talking about something from 85 Bears.

About Steve situation- It didn't seem certain that he would be gone, more like if we can get a really good value for him then he will stay, if not then it would be best for team if he plays. That's my impression anyways.

Last question- Playing in some golf tournament (pro/am? Not sure what they are talking about).

- No, and some random fluff

Talking about Singltary/Rivera Tecmo Super Bowl Defense, Joe Ovies says that was incredible defense. Rivera laughs about it, says some fluff.

And interview ends there.

    • Icky was always a weak pass blocker come out of college. Cross was the premier pass blocker in that class. Much easier to learn run blocking than pass blocking. I never expected Icky to ever become an elite pass blocker. If he was average, that's all I really expected. I did expect him to be an absolute mailer in the run game.
    • We aren’t in danger of being in the basement anymore and if we keep drafting well we could get to the playoffs after a while. I don’t mind if we get a new QB and coach eventually but we are “stable” and I’m grateful for it.
    • I prefer 9-8. Reason being, winning season shows overall improvement and is the 1st step to establishing a winning culture. Backing into the playoffs with a losing record doesn't show you earned anything. It's the product of a weak division. If playoffs were based off records, most likely you're not going because another team(s) have a better record.  Chances are too, the next season, you're going to have a tougher schedule and a couple of those bounces that went your way are going to go the other direction and it's another losing season and no playoffs.  There have been 5 teams to get into the playoffs with a losing record. The 2014 and 2025 Panthers are 2 of those teams. Losing record trip 3 isn't exactly something I would be proud of doing. We have 9 playoff appearances so far, 2 of them simply because we won a shitty division. Another one would mean 30% of our appearances are only because we were the least stinky turd. That's a stat I'd want to flush.
