Give Cam Some Auburn Plays

I was watching NFL Network the other day and the were discussing Cam Newton and how successful he would be, etc.

One of the ideas that popped up was to give Cam some plays from Auburn to run. It made sense on many levels, because obviously Cam has seen these plays and run them in college.

I say do it, absolutely. Especially of the Panthers intend to start Cam right off. Even if they don't start him right away, I think it is a good idea to have him run Auburn plays along with the simpler plays from Chudzinski, and then begin to phase the Auburn plays out.

I guess it depends on how Cam does in training camp. But I really don't see how it could hurt to throw some of those Auburn plays in, to boost his confidence and let him run plays he has already had success with.

Agreed?

crap, i'd just like to see them keep the pace that they did at auburn. seems like it would fit into what rivera and chud want to do in forcing the defense to adjust to you rather than you adjusting the offense based on what the defense is giving you.

i think they have been talking to mahlzahn about what he did there and they have talked about adjusting the playbook to incorporate his strengths. we'll see some similarities between the two, i'm sure.

They did give Armaniti those plays and I think they will do the same with Cam. Maybe a few adjustments. Personally I think we should stay away from Aurburn plays. I don't want to see Cam trying to run unless he is under pressure, and even then it should not be 'getting positive yards', that part of Auburn plays won't fly in the NFL.

The piece of the Auburn O which should get put in is the use of no huddle. While it may seem counter-intuitive to have a rookie running no huddle, I believe it actually simplifies his options. It's almost impossible for the D to sustitute since the ball can be hiked at any time, so the team has to stay in base. If it happens to get into nickel, you run the ball. It also makes it much harder to run stunts/blitzes because it doesn't give the D a chance to huddle and get sideline calls. Cam has the experience calling the plays from the line of scrimmage (even it it's more complicated than 36), and has shown success doing it.

    • What's wrong with Damien Lewis? He played pretty well last year.
    • Official NFL Cuts Tracker Deadline for roster cuts is Tuesday, August 26th. At this moment (Friday, August 22nd) the only interesting names I see are... K Caden Davis (BUF) RB Ameer Abdullah (SF) WR Equanimeous St. Brown (SF) WR Donovan Peoples-Jones (NO) LB Khaleke Hudson (TEN) Abdullah, St. Brown, Peoples-Jones I don't exactly think we should cut anybody for but it was just interesting seeing those names. Khaleke Hudson was on the Panthers' practice squad last year I believe and might have even gotten called up? And of course, Caden Davis just because of the question mark at kicker this season for the team.
    • I'll say 6/10. I don't know that we learned a whole lot about this team during preseason that we didn't already know. We didn't play the starters enough to really get a feel for what to expect. We had one good drive against the Browns, one 3-and-out and two 3-and-outs against the Texans. That's an extremely small sample size across 3 games regardless of performance. My camp/preseason takeaways: Jalen Coker might be the best WR on this team and is certainly no worse than #2. Nic Scourton is going to be a good player for us. Possibly very good. Bobby Brown was our best free agent addition. Jack Plummer isn't an NFL QB. Not even a practice squad guy. Having anyone other than Canales and Evero call plays was a really stupid and pointless idea. Our depth is largely non-existent, especially on defense. The three areas we actually DO have depth are on the OL, in the WR corp. and at RB. I can't fathom why Dan Morgan didn't do more to upgrade ILB during the offseason. We better hope Lathan Ransom steps up at FS because if he doesn't we have a massive hole. For all the hype surrounding Sanders/Evans, Tommy Tremble is still the best TE on the roster. I'm only slightly less enthusiastic going into the regular season than I was a month ago. I think our starters on offense are solid and we should be pretty good there unless Bryce totally regresses. On defense, we're probably bottom 3rd in the league if 100% healthy and significantly worse than that if injuries become an issue. We badly need at least two of our rookies to become high-level players early (ideally one of the pass rushers + Ransom) and at least 2 of our free agent additions (ideally Moehrig + Bobby Brown) to be significant upgrades over last year. Call me pessimistically optimistic 😆
