As Urry mentioned earlier, no DT other than Suh comes in and dominates as a rookie. I remember when NO drafted Sedrick Ellis number 7 in the draft and they all thought he would dominate right away. He did start as a rookie but only recorded 20 solo tackles and 10 assists with 4 sacks. He only played 13 games due to injury playing 10 games in his second season. About the same stats as Landri put up last year and he is a journeymen who isn't even guaranteed a roster spot.

So honestly if a high first rounder takes a few years to become a load in the NFL, it is unlikely that a low third rounder will come in and do much right away. it would be nice but unexpected. We need a proven vet while these young players gets experience and refine their moves.

I love this time of the year. Every single draft pick that people like are going to dominate...

People just need to slow down and not expect too much from him. He may play well, but it's incredibly doubtful he will dominate like some of you are expecting. DT is one of the biggest transitions.

dont expect him to dominate, but i do expect him to start.

If he starts he will either be much better than expectations based on where we drafted him or we will have failed to address the DT position again this year in free agency. I think he may start down the road, but given he hasn't practiced at all this year, I would be surprised if any rookie starts other than Newton. Even then I would like to see us bring in a vet who could start until Newton got some experience.

As for Fua, he might not even be our best rookie DT. Many folks think McClain might be better. Hard to tell since neither of them have put on any pads this year.

Well I believe in a couple of weeks we will find out. There is one thing about training camp it seperates the man vs boys, competition. If he Plays good in Camp and exceed expectation he will start plain and simple. Fua or Mcclain i see one of them start. The real competition will be between them i can see..

It also depends on who we bring in for competition through free agency and how our veterans do. I would hope neither of them start meaning we have better options while they learn the game. Starting rookies always is a gamble and leads to occasional breakdowns. Something we don't really need.

This ain't the PAC 10, but I think Fua will be a very productive player and we need a true NT when we use the 34 alignment on certain plays.

True this Isn't the PAC 10 but the PAC 10 has produced some great offensive linemen so its not like he was playing below average competition. I hope the best for Fua and McClain.

he should win the nt spot with ease, and i see more of guy that plays the 3 tech being brought in for comp. Fua can beat out Hayden for that spot. nt dont have to know much.

I am still waiting to see if McDermott plays more of a straight up 4-3 or runs a 4-3 under/over. In either case I think we will move guys around and use more penetrating 3 technique guys versus a 0 technique NT run stuffer in the middle who can't play against the pass. So for any of the guys to win the NT spot he will have to play the nose and the 3 technique equally as well. More like we used Jenkins under Fox. With the other teams in the division being big passing offenses, getting pressure on the QB will be at a premium. Not sure at this point how a rookie will stand up to double teams by veterans offensive players with equal size and lots more experience. The answer I suspect is not that well right off the bat.

If we are lucky enough to get Cofield or Mebane in free agency they will be our nose tackle no doubt. Also Corvey Irvin might decide to show up and play this year if he makes the squad.
