Stewart wants us to hang on to Williams

I don't know where I said that I expect him to have 08-type success? If you can point me to that post, I'll eat crow. But methinks you'll have a hard time finding it. And if you REALLY want to talk about conjecture, let's try to predict stats 3 years down the road. That's water-tight logic right there.

ok, so you're willing to give him top RB money without even expecting him to produce like a top RB

you sure you're heart's not influencing your judgment here?

You must've stopped watching in 08. He did his thing in 09 too and had 361 in the first six games splitting carries last year, sounds like the same ol' D-Will to me. It's not about loyalty its about production and he produces. Here's some more conjecture; Stewart couldn't even manage to practice and having D-Will start the games so he could come in fresh has helped him stay healthy all season. I wonder what would happen if he had to practice everyday and carry the ball 30 times a game.

Wait, nevermind, I get it now its about the 20 mil a year we're gonna have to pay him. Lets not sign D-Will then we can sign S. Holmes somehow and have a little spare change for N. Aso. Fug it might as well get Mankins, Cofield and V.Jax too with all the cap not signing D-Will is gonna free up.

edit: I forgot Peyton Manning

not sure how you came up with that conclusion... :sifone:

yea well i would consider it a blockbuster FA move if we re-signed our star back for top money and it was 1995.

but it's 2011, the running game is less critical now than it was then and the one man running game that you used to have is even less emphasized so to tie up that much money in one player that has not once carried the ball 300+ times in a season doesn't scream good business to me

Wasn't it within the last 2 or 3 seasons that the league changed from a 1-back league to a 2-back league? Didn't Jonathan Stewart/DeAngelo Williams and Chris Johnson/Fat Tub of Lard and Brandon Jacobs/Ahmad Bradshaw pioneer that movement? Now all of a sudden running game isn't critical?

Put next season on a Rookie QBs shoulders and then tell me how critical the running game is.

Oh wait, we did that last year.

actually, it is pretty well documented what 31 yr old RBs do in the NFL compared to the younger guys in their primes.

I'm shocked to learn that players in their prime out-perform players not in their prime. Thanks for the insight.

It's funny to read threads like this where posters make up stuff about Jonathan Stewart having a "degenerative ankle condition" and gloss over the fact that he's played in more games than Williams and at times performed better in his absence since being drafted.

I'm just using you guys logic now. Signing D-Will is going to prevent us from signing guys we're not gonna try to sign anyway(Aso/Holmes). D-Will is not as good as he used to be somehow and Goodson and Sutton are stars in the making.Stew/Goody/Sutton>> >>>>>>>>D-Will/Stew/Goody. I get it now. Stewart is as healthy as they come and just has Iverson syndrome "Practice?" He doesn't need D-Will to split the load so his toe doesn't fall off. We don't want no damn 2 top RB's we just want 1. Lets skim the pooty offense some more by getting rid of the old ass 28 yr old elite RB we don't need but expect every other team to go crazy and pay a grip for. Let's take that 5-6 mil and look at 1 other guy at another position that might not pan out or lets keep it traditional and get 6 guys that won't be on the depth chart in two years. I love thinking like this.

I can't think of another time I've read so much conjecture from one group trying to keep their head above water..

pioneer?

ever hear of Willie Parker/Jerome Bettis? Warrick Dunn/TJ Duckett? James Stewart/Fred Taylor? Jamal Lewis/Priest Holmes?

RBs have been splitting the load for years

Again, show me where I said we should break the bank for him.

that's what it'll take to keep him. what do you think he's going to give us a 3 million dollar Carolina discount?

True story, running backs are hard to find in todays nfl.

I know right. Everywhere I look I see a guy that can pick up a 1000 yards splitting carries 50/50 and is a threat to take it to the house on any play. The league is full of those guys , poo we got two on the bench just waiting.

exactly, teams built to win now with a weakness at tailback WILL be willing to buy Williams.....and it would be justified.

a team rebuilding that is already solid at RB......is better off putting that money elsewhere.

Willie Parker had 1 good season with Jerome Bettis. TJ Duckett? You're reaching now. His best season is 779 yards in a year where Warrick Dunn only had 672. James Stewart only had 1 good season (931 yards) in a year where Fred taylor only had 732. And Jamal Lewis and Priest Holmes played 1 season together in Baltimore in a year that Priest had 506 yards.

I'm talking about having 2 feature backs, not just two mediocre running backs splitting carries.

I thought maybe we could have a decent debate, but you're just flinging poo at the wall now hoping that it sticks.

Well, losing Williams doesnt mean we lose our entire running game and this offense is accustomed to running the ball effectively without him being there anyway, judging by the last two seasons.

He'd definitely be nice to have back, but the nfl is changing, we're adjusting accordingly, and we have bigger priorities to address than a platoon rb whom half our fanbase has an inflated opinion of due to being irrational homers who just happen to own his jersey. He's not a quarterback, a pass rusher, or a key lineman; he plays the most disposable position in sports and his replacement is already on the roster and has shown he's probably better going forward.
