yea but that's because robert downey effectively IS Tony Stark. they just lucked out there.

it's really difficult (and ridiculously expensive) to establish a franchise with a high paid superstar. Batman gets away with it because he wears a mask, same with spider man. if you try to make brad pitt superman, it would just be brad pitt dressed up as superman. difficult thing to contend with.

I'm not saying you need to get someone like Brad Pitt or Jimmy Depp. But someone people have heard of, B list like on the level of John Hamm or Ryan Reynolds.

There's a reason they are famous, and it's because they're charismatic and people tend to like them. When you go with an unknown because they might look similar to Superman and can act alright, you're missing the key ingredient that is the charisma (read: swag) to actually be the larger than life character.

90% of people couldn't tell you who the hell played Superman in the last movie, because he was a swagless nobody that they hired because he had generic model looks.

i'm not saying it was good casting but good casting doesn't have to be recognizable actors. I attribute our lack of knowledge about the last guy who played superman more to the garbage movie than the actor.

a solid 80% of the reason i didn't want to see green lantern was ryan reynolds. I know EXACTLY what he brings to the table, it's exactly the same every movie he's in and I'll pass.
