Rriverrrrerrra says Panthers can win 10 games this season

OK skeptics

Have we improved at the following positions:

CB: With Marshall gone, considering other teams completed 75% of passes thrown to his man, and considering we played several games with Munnerlyn and 7th round rookie Robert McCain, I would say, we have to be a little better.

S: We are the same regarding personnel, but the scheme is different. Hard to tell yet.

LB: Lets see, We have Anderson, Beason in the middle, a healthy Thomas Davis, Gaither and a healthy Connor. MUCH BETTER.

DE: Charles Johnson and Tyler Brayton vs. Charles Johnson and Greg Hardy, with better shemes for Norwood and Brown. We should improve, but not by much.

DT: Even with 2 rookies and Neblett and Irvin, we should be improved. Irvin;s development is the key, but Fua and McClain are better than what we started last year.

So defensively, we will be better. We were not too bad last year, considering how long the D was on the field.

Offensively

QB: Clausen will be better, Cam should become a star. Much improvement with growing pains.

RB: Stewart is actually healthy and practicing. DW is healthy. Better

WR: Gettis, Lafell, and Edwards are better this year (or should be). Smith will be better with better QB play. Pilares and Naanee are solid. Better.

OL: Let's see, Wharton is back from a toe injury and Otah will play. Better.

TE: This is the difference maker on offense. Look for the dynamic duo at TE to catch 90 balls, create matchup problems for the defense, and make us formidible in the red zone. MUCH BETTER. What CLausen would have done with these 2 last year--you all might not hate him as much.

The offense is better. The defense is better. THe coaching staff is better. Why do you all expect the same results as last year? Why not 10 wins? Why only 10 wins? If Cam has a tremendous rookie year, we could do it. Don't bet against him.

The biggest thing is last year was clearly a tank job, top to bottom for numerous reasons. By mid season I was openly rooting for us to lose (first time I've ever done that in my personal history of fandom, by the way), believing there was a method to it. I agree with your earlier post, that wasn't a typical 2-14 team.

ravens, eagles, steelers.

Not worried about our schedule. You're either a good football team or you're not.

Besides, I see the Steelers, but not the Ravens or or Eagles. I do see the Dolphins, Bengals, Cards, Jag-wires, Redskins, Titans and Texans.

I'm a skeptic. I admit things are better. I don't think we'll win ten games, but we'll be better.

Much better.

The thing is, that "much better" may not directly translate into a ton of wins... we'll have to see.

With a rookie QB, and I do think Cam will start sooner than later, 10 wins is a tall order, but possible on a team that is pretty good, overall.

if our QBs suck ass I would be astonished to go 6-10. Our defense is going to be good, our run game should be solid, but we're going to need solid quarterback play to win that many games (not saying they need to play great, just... solid)

I think the Panthers can win 6 games with sub-par QB play. I think they have enough talent across the board to do that.

Mav, what's your over/under for the Panthers this year?

I don't know for sure, but I can see why Vegas set the odds at 4.5... I've said before I could see us winning 4 with struggling QBs, winning a couple more with solid QB play... because even though we have talent, we always lose some of it to injuries, and a good running game without good quarterback play can only take you so far. We're also installing a totally new offense (and new defense) and I don't expect the offense to be completely ready for the start of the season. the defense may also take some time to gel because of DL issues.

I think we will be much better than our record though...

I can too, but if I was a betting man, I would put over money on that one. I honestly think last year the Panthers had a mandate to fail, not so this year.

I think the Panther's record last season was just a case of too much poo going on at one time in the upper management levels of the team. Not that they went cheap or anything like that last season, the talent was there and still is. I mean you have a top 10 WR when he's healthy and has decent QB play, 2 of the best RB's in the league. One of the best TE groups in the league now and a top 5-10 Oline. That's just on Offense, the team's weak point. QB play is the kicker on offense, if Newton or Clausen can be average QB's this season. I can see the offense putting up 20 pts a game.

While on Defense, we have what should be a top 10 unit in both Pass and Rush defense.

If this years Panthers can get some improved play from the QB spot, I'd say 10 wins is definitely reachable. poo happens though and I don't expect that, what I do expect is 6-8 wins and the team to be competitive in most games. Which I think we as fans will see this coming season, it might be a little rough getting out of the gates with the lack of OTA's and practices though.

I'm going to go with 7 wins as my mark for Rivera in his first season in Carolina.

    • Bryce has been in the NFL 3 years and still looks like a very mediocre QB. Most games are nothing but mediocre plays with a highlight reel every now and then.  He is a very INCONSISTENT QB and it’s very fustrating. He does not deserve a 5th year option, even though the Panthers and all the dumb asses in the front office will give it to him.
    • I’ve rarely ever been more sure of anything than losing out — but how can anyone say with a straight face “Bryce hasn’t improved, but Canales has and he’s masks his flaws”. You have to be so out of touch with reality to put one way above the other when discussing those two.
    • Last night was the classic example of a visiting team just holding on through the wave of emotion a home team has at the start of a big time game. Bama’s first two kickoff returns really set them back as far as playcalling and allowed OU to dictate field position. The emotion of the home crowd fed into what OU was doing at that point, and it felt like Bama would not be able to overcome that.     Once the kickoff returner was told to fair catch every kick, the game shifted, as Bama wasn’t starting each drive inside their own 15. It was then that Bama was able to make some plays, outscoring OU 34-7 the rest of the way.  I think the last 3/4 of the game proves Bama was the better team. OU was just able to ride the initial wave of emotion to a big lead, but Bama held on just enough.  However, had OU blocked the punt on Bama’s second drive and scored a TD (vice a FG on the ensuing drive), things likely would have been different.  Anyway, Roll Tide!
