choose 5 WRs, 3 TEs, 3 RBs, 2 FBs....

yeah, he'd have to be there in a dual role of TE and LS, but then we'd lose out on jensen who is a very solid LS guy. barney would be just learning the job. not sure i feel safe with that.

I would trust the coaches call here. I feel that if Barnidge is good enough then Rivera will put him on the roster as LS, if not then it will be Jansen again and at the least we will know our LS spot is consistent. Honestly I'm just trying to reach to keep as many of them on the team as possible. We'll see what happens but I wouldn't be that surprised one way or the other.

so we'd be better off with some unproven 5th round rookie WR like pilares than a guy we know can play solid ball as a TE receiver and on special teams?

I think Barnidge's opportunity has already come and gone and if they decide to cut him, I'd be alright with it.

From what I've heard he has done pretty well in practice. Why would his opportunity be gone? John Fox years don't count for much now.

i'm not sure i get the fascination with pilares.

we know barney can play. we know he's a reliable receiver. we know he's solid on special teams. we know that under fox, no TE had a real opportunity to show what they can do, esp. if they had the misfortune of being drafted after the other two TEs on the roster.

it almost seems like even if the 6th WR is unproven or will likely be the weak link among all the receivers, it's still better to have that 6th WR than a proven guy like barnidge and/or sutton.

like i said in the OP, other chud offenses went with just 5 WRs. why do we need more than that? hartsock won't be a part of the receiving game. he's there to help the run game. wouldn't barnidge be more likely to see the field and be involved as a 3rd TE than someone like pilares?

now if we were talking clowney, that would be a different matter, but not pilares who is PS eligible. doesn't make more sense to try and stash him away there than cut loose some other more proven player?

Im working under rayzor's rules. If it were mine we won't have a 2nd FB.
actually, you could put the 13 players where ever you wanted. i wasn't just using that as a template because that was what the teams who's offense we are going to be running did. i do think that it would be a mistake to only go with 1 FB, though. at least have someone who can handle the job should the FB go down. FB saw the field quite a bit with chud and norv's offenses. considering the beating they take, we need to make sure there is someone who can handle the job if the first one goes down.
Damn, we shouldn't have picked up Naanee or Shockey. I really liked Pilares and I would rather keep T-Sutt instead of having an old ass TE who was always overrated anyways.
the problems is, do we want the best players on the team or just the ones we like?

i'm just glad that i'm not the one making the calls.

right now naanee probably has the edge on the WR2 job, even without practicing yet. years of experience in the system, plus his strengths as a blocker and then his solid ST play makes him pretty valuable.

seems like from rivera's comments that the job is his to lose.

On what he is looking for from the Panthers number two wide receiver: First of all, we're looking for a guy that's going to make plays, a guy that's willing to come in and block and a guy that can ascend and become the guy that is going to take over at that position. The biggest thing right now is we've had nobody step to the forefront. With a guy like Legedu Naaneeicon-article-link.gif out there, who's been a number two in certain situations in San Diego and knows the system, we thought this would be a good opportunity to bring a guy in that has that kind of potential and ability. And we're not giving up on anybody by any means. We really believe that the other guys all have the opportunity to ascend as well, and we'll make that judgment come September 11.

From my view, it seems like he was pushing Gettis and Lafell. But maybe I'm just being unreasonable, not considering what was our best option.

Gettis and Lafell were unproven last year. Many people thought Gettis would be cut, just like Pilares now. We aren't cutting our 5th rounder. We never have.
