Rivera did say Newton will start the final preseason game.

"The big thing is to continue to see how he handles everything," Rivera said. "We have to really study him and watch him. We have to make sure he's progressing in the right direction. This is a very sincere thing for us. We don't want to just say, 'Hey, you're the guy,' and walk away from it. At the same time, we want him to understand that he is working towards being our guy."

Otah should be back, too...

still don't understand why we aren't announcing he is starting vs arizona... that quote doesn't really resolve it much for me... are they afraid if they tell him he is that guy he'll stop 'progressing in the right direction'?

I just don't understand why Anderson isn't in the running as a starter for us. Why are they pushing for Cam to be the starter so badly? Ticket sales is the only reason i can figure but we need to look at the big picture. Let Cam sit and learn until he's ready regardless how long it takes.

I think what he is saying is Cam hasn't won the job yet, and they would like to see him win it.

But really, it isn't a competition. They won't play Anderson, and Jimmy's already banged up, so everyone and their brother knows Cam is going to start.

I agree that Rivera is being a bit fuzzy on this, when there probably is no reason for it.

there isn't even a competition anymore, and there hasn't been since before the second preseason game I think.

Cam proved Thursday, that he can run on NFL defenses. Remember that one? "Cam won't be able to run on NFL defenses, he'll get killed."

Like Tuck said, "He's big as poo out there."

the point was more he couldn't run as often in the same way against NFL defenses like he did against Auburn... we won't really know if that is the case until the season is underway. His running ability did impress me though, I just hope he finds a way to get tough yards without throwing his shoulder into defenders.

    • That should have been this year. Tough to sell to anyone worth getting when this crew is going into year 3 on the hot seat. I still think keeping Evero will sink them all after last year's showing. If/when he is scapegoated they need to show improvement or it's likely to be so eone else's problem next year. I do agree in principle tho, it all should have happened after last year's problems.
    • I've listened to some things that have calmed the "Bryce was flat out terrible" to just "he was really bad" in Week 1. It's Year 3 though, and that shouldn't be the barometer. I've got 1% hope left for Bryce, and that's just blind homerism coming out.  I'm scared that as much emphasis as the team places on advanced stats and PFF that the team *doesn't* think Bryce was that bad in Week 1. Couple that with so many of the QBs in the league looking rough, offense being down in general, and I feel like there's a lot of "what if's" going on in the building instead of facing the music.  Lose Week 2, and we should switch the main focus back to building/churning the roster, evaluating young guys, and hoping our next QB can have a Jayden Daniels level of impact. As we're all well too aware of, QB is a crapshoot a lot of the time. Admit we made a bad pick, and go draft another. And another. Repeat until correct.
    • I wouldn't want any of those starting as a rookie on day 1.  That said, we need a vet, that is not Andy Dalton, that can be the starter while a prospect grows and learns on the sidelines.
