Office debate: Best Hollywood remakes of all time?

In honor of The Thing coming soon which is a remake of a remake. Whatcha got?

I say, well, The Thing in 82 is THE greatest remake of all time.

I would have to agree with the Thing, but the Departed, the Fly, Scarface, dawn of the dead, and the Magnificent 7 would have to be up there. Of course some of those are remakes of foreign films.

I also thought the new the Thing was a prequel to the remake? (Talk about mind fug)

I can't think of a single remake that was better than the original that I saw. The problem is they remake the classics. I know some will laugh at this, but I don't think you mess with The Longest Yard. Or Planet of the Apes. Or anything that got it right the first time. Remake something that someone effed up.

The only remake I have ever seen that was almost as good as the original was "The Elusive Pimpernel" starring David Niven as The Scarlet Pimpernel. This was a remake of "The Scarlet Pimpernal" played perfectly by Leslie Howard. "Sink Me!"

The Scarlet Pimpernel was the original James Bond and Batman rolled into one!

Carpenter's Thing is great, Ocean's 11 is far superior to the original, I thought True Grit was better, 3:10 to Yuma and the Fly are great as well...

Whoever said The Departed and Magnificent 7... no.
