The guys with the longest punt average have the same number or less of In the 20 punts as Baker.

That further proves my point that punts inside the 20 are not hindering his numbers, or limiting his distance on punts. So why is his punting average so low?

I don't see much of a problem with our kickers. Could they both be better? Yeah, but they're not the issue. Our return game is what is a joke and our coverage unit.

I think if Baker had more hang time on his punts, then our coverage unit would make more stops.. of course this is just a theory, and I can't prove it.. but I think this could make a lot of sense.

I just know that Baker is ranking dead last in both major punting statistical categories, and that could stand to be majorly improved.

It should all average out. He will have his bad punts, and will have his great punts.. but it appears that his bad punts are outweighing the great punts. Evidenced by ranking dead last in both major punting categories.

That's like saying you need to grade each throw subjectively from Cam Newton. Bottom line, is Cam Newton is throwing 8.7 yards per pass, which is 3rd in the NFL. The great passes and bad passes average out and give you a true number.

You do have to grade each throw subjectively. And not to get off topic but Newton is not at 8.7 and he's not 3rd.....just to nitpick.

Statistically speakig, the more important number is median, not mean.....but whatever.

I agree that Baker is falling off from his first seasons here.

I made a point to watch the blocking on kickoffs and punts this week. On some of the kickoffs our guys were barely touching the other team and 4 guys would basically have the returner completely covered.

As far as baker, he had punts from the Washington 47 and 46 and they were both fair caught at the 12 and 13 respectively.

That is OK but you want it to land a few a yards deeper so that we have a chance to pin them.

They can't be that much better... Mare kicked every single kickoff out of the back of the endzone Sunday. Baker is a good punter... I have no problem with him.

We need to focus on the other aspects of STs.

We are 5 yards off the league average and we punt on average 4 times a game, so it is potentially costing us maybe 20 yards.

Using the unscientific eyeball test, I have not perceived punting distance to be a problem when watching games.

We can always get better at all phases of the game, but this would be low on my list of priorities.

The 8.7 and 3rd place was not meant to be accurate, just to show a point. Whatever the real numbers may be.

I have never had a reason to question Baker.. in fact, I didn't even realize he sucked until I found him on the pro bowl ballot.. and saw that he was the worst punter in the NFC, and then realized he was the worst (statistically) punter in the NFL. This obviously raised an eyebrow.

How about you consider something else.

Due to our poor coverage he is forced/being asked to kick for maximum hang time to ensure our gunners are near the returner. It's no secret our special teams were giving up huge chunks of yardage, so it might actually be a more conscious attempt to not out kick our coverage team. To back this argument up, Baker has a second best in the league of just 29.2% of punts returned.

The other thing you need to consider is that before the Washington game, he had only had 24 punts, two of which were returned for TD's. Of his 170 yards he had given up, 158 came from those two. Whilst you can't ignore these returns, from a statistical standpoint, those two are anomalies which grossly affect the averages.

Mare has only missed a 52 yarder this year (had another blocked). I don't think anyone is complaining.

I agree, no one is complaining about Mare. I couldn't be happier with Mare, besides, I think his range/distance is poor. But he is accurate as any kicker in the NFL. This thread was purely about Jason Baker.

    • It is a tough decision.  There is another factor.  Is he in game shape?  A tired Hunt is not better than an "in-shape" Corbett.  When coming off an injury, it is natural to want to protect the injured area, even if it is completely healed.  This can cause you to contort your body for no reason, lose fundamentals, and it could lead to other injuries.  For example, I had a knee in high school that required getting taped.  That made me aware of the knee (not used to tape on my knee) and I pulled my groin (favoring or dragging the leg with the tape).  The trainer explained the groin injury the way I do here--but scared money makes no money.  If he is cleared to play, he is cleared to play.  Watch him, rotate him in for a series, etc.  Specifically, I would want to watch the matchup--who is winning more--Corbett or Hunt?  How is the defense reacting (if at all) to Hunt being in?  Etc.
    • Shannon was sued for $50 million (settled out of court, I believe) for forcing sex on his girlfriend during a two-year relationship.  He denies it, but ESPN let him go last April.  Chad Johnson's wife filed a police report because he head-butted her in a car and was put on probation. I had to google it.  I watched the Ray Rice video and when you see it, you realize just how vile and cowardly abusing a woman really is.  But for the same point Aussie tried to make, these women are defenseless, and being phyiscally bigger and stronger does not validate your actions.   I can't even stand to watch Steve Smith.  I can't normalize this kind of behavior--again, I do not think R-P had that in mind when he posted this.  When the reason was exposed, we should realize that we are talking life (quality of) and death (in some cases) here.
    • I can respect the fact that we should not glorify or normalize men who have a history of beating women.  I do not think anyone was thinking of that when they posted this, but if head-butting your wife and unconsensual sex (rape) is something you cannot overlook, I agree with that.  I think they are both half-crazed attention hounds regardless of their pasts.
