Fletcher Cox - DT - Miss St.

Good player with a lot of upside. I could see him being picked at #25 going to Denver where some mocks have him projected. Makes sense, their in need of a penetrating UT to team next to Bunkley (if they resign him which they should).

I don't see either line being addressed in the first two rounds.

That would be a huge mistake imo. It may seem like a heavy cliche but games are won and lost in the trenches. The only scenario what you said could make sense is if we go OLB/S/CB (any combo) in the first 2 rounds which could happen but then again we need to find line talent somewhere.

It shouldn't matter what he have coming back because if we have injury issues again (which seems like an annual problem), we're in the same position as last season and will suffer.

*on a general note: This kid could go anywhere from 18-32 right now imo so he may not be a target specifically for us atm but like I said I don't see why we wouldn't be looking at him this pre-draft season

I believe in your cliche, just look at the title under my name. However, we have more pressing needs and, IMO, are pretty solid along both lines.

I really want to be on the same page because I typically agree with you on a lot of things over the years but just don't get it.

Under your scenario though I would be fine with Jenkins/Kirkpatrick/Upshaw/Ingram and then a S/CB/OLB/WR in the second. So I'm not leaving it out of the question but I just don't understand why you're ok with our line situations.

It's a combination of two things really.

On the OL we're getting Schwartz back who played very well at RG the year before. You also get Otah back with more rest than he's had in forever. Even if Otah does go down you have Bell who will have a year under his belt and an actual off season to work on his deficiencies. Gross, Wharton and Kalil still make for a very good trio. I'd like to see the two on the left restructure their deals to be a little more cap friendly. I would LOVE to sign the other Schwartz for depth at the RT spot. He looks like a baller.

DL- CJ was slowed by a back injury, the DT spot was a mess and Hardy was very effective and chasing QB's, but not getting to them. He was rough against the run but he's coming into his third season which is where most DL have the light turn on, per se. I'm also a BIG believer in NFL off season strength programs especially for Linemen and LB's, something we didn't have this past offseason.

As far as the inside goes we just drafted Fua (who I am not a fan of thus far) and McClain who showed some promise as a penetrator. Now you add the return of Ron Edwards who will essentially play the role Kemo played you improve the entire D. He's coming back from a tricep injury, if it was a shoulder or lower body injury I'd be more concerned about his performance post injury. Lastly if you look at the guys we brought in at the end of the season I see some huge bodies that actually played pretty well. When you add all that, plus the return of Beason and a SLB I just don't see the need to address the DL. If there was a Dareus, McCoy, Suh type DT in the draft then I'd be ok with it. But given what we have on the roster now AND the guys available in the draft I just think we would be far better served addressing that WLB spot, or CB.

I'm not absolutely opposed to taking a linemen, especially this early in the process I just think we have more pressing needs with more impressive prospects available.

Good argument. I see where you're coming from much better now. Hopefully Ron can play well next season.

Now back to Cox, I agree with whoever said he'll most likely wind up around the low-mid 20s but he has a legit shot to rise on some teams' boards.

I know where he's being projected right now and honestly, I don't give a poo, I want him in the first. I think he's gonna shoot up mock drafts these next few months and truthfully, I wouldn't mind taking him with our first pick.

That's really how I feel but I'm no expert about the whole draft process. I just think he's easily the top DT prospect overall and can fit either a 3-4 or 4-3 and be very fitting for our hybrid 3-4 packages (3-4 is simply his niche but it doesn't prove he can't play a 4-3)....and I don't think he'll need to bulk up a huge amount. He's strong as fug just slightly off-balanced when he get's over-aggressive.

Still's injury history concerns me and Brockers is a shot in the dark with the ability to be a huge run stopper in the league. I think Cox is an all around player who can run stuff and create pressure along with blocking field goals and deflecting balls with his athletic ability. Don't get me wrong, I'm not dissing Brockers but Cox has a big resume to show and stood out on an already solid Miss St. d.
