Why I'm more concerned about the O-line then WR

At the end of the 2011 season our starting left Tackle was playing on this team the last time we went to the Superbowl, both our starting guards are over 30 and our starting right tackle was an undrafted rookie who pretty often got embarrassed.

I like the potential of Geoff Schwartz and Garry Williams but I have almost no faith in Jeff Otah. So who is going to be are starting right tackle next? Lee Ziemba? Byron Bell? O-linemen also get hurt much more often then WRs.

Now Look at our WR core. Smitty just got back from the pro bowl and probably atleast has two more solid years left. LaFell went from the doghouse to the definitive #2 option. Gettis showed flashes 2 years ago on possibly one of the worst passing offenses of all time. Pilares looks like a gamer. And Legadu could be rotated in and out for absolutely no money.

Oh and we have two of the best pass catching Tight Ends in the league...

Name on of the Patriots Wide Receivers outside of Wes Welker. And don't tell me Chad Ochocinco or Deion Branch.

Oh also there are some spots we could use some help on defense. I know some of you kids on here only watch the highlight real so you assume WR is the most important position on the field but please stfu about the position.

I wouldn't be upset if we took Riley with our first pick. Just because it's not a sexy pick doesn't make it a bad pick. He's a potential game changing OT, which are really hard to come by even later in the first round. He'd be insurance for Otah, an apprentice for Gross, and could help shore clear some much needed cap space (Schwartz at RG, cut Wharton and either Bell or Hangman could take that guard spot). Wharton is not worth what he's making, so if he becomes a cap casualty, we could use some of that money on shoring up our ST and D, our STD. Haha.

But WR is NOT a need. It's just an exciting pick. Protecting Cam is our priority. He has plenty of weapons at his disposal as it is.

I'm advocating Defense with our first pick, but I def see the logic in Oline, and I can't hate what it could open up for our team.

The problem with your logic is you have already written off Otah. Our FO has not. They will give him this year to see if he can "become the player they think he can become". Therefore if you're going to give him the year, WR becomes more of an issue. Betting on Gettis or Otah is not smart, without either WR is a much more dire need seeing as we have a rookie QB and a 'passing attacking' offense. If we are going the whole stack up on mediocre WR route we need to start stacking up fast because we have a one or maybe a couple.

Personally I don't think Otah will be able to come back and if he does god forbid seeing his motivation after he gets paid, we all just have to cross our fingers.

Panthers will most likley go CB and Oline with first two picks

When I look at the intangibles of Gettis and Lafell I don't see a lot of mediocrity. All they need is health and a strong work effort to be successful in the NFL.

I don't think Cam will allow his WRs to be less then average and I don't think players who don't put in effort will last long on Ron Rivera's roster.

The Pro Bowl just proved it even further: good offensive line play is paramount for quarterback success.

When Rodgers and Brees had all day to throw, they killed the defense. When the AFC decided to gun for Cam, despite having Pro Bowl receivers at every position he was basically screwed every snap.

Wide receivers are the shiny hood ornaments of the offense:

a bunch of decent ones plus a great o-line > a bunch of Pro Bowl targets and a crap o-line.

We should take the best player of need with the first pick. If Claiborn falls to us, we take him. We do need to get someone for the o-line. Hangartner and Schwartz are free agents. Otah is in a contract year and Wharton and Gross are getting older. I don't see wr as a greater need than the defense. Our problem was not putting up points, it was stopping the other teams. They just outscored us.

      I don't see it as drafting a premium player to sit and wait if Walker gets hurt. We need a legitimate swing T. Unless you have a Sewell or Slater type tackle that is pretty much a sure thing, these guys can need some time to develop year 1 just like a QB ideally should. They all haven't played the elite 5 star talent on the edge. If we think another franchise tackle has dropped to us at 19, you have to pull the trigger. The position is just too damn hard to find. If it's just a "we need a tackle and this guy has a T on the board", yeah, move on, take one in the later rounds. But if that guy is there, let him back up and learn a year, then slide him into LT on year 2 of his rookie deal.  I don't see us being able to offer Walker a multi year contract after a prove it year, pay Moton his final almost fully guaranteed year, Hunt, Lewis a center and do a 50-60m extension for Bryce. The 3 most important positions on the field are QB, blindside tackle (usually LT), and edge rusher. Those are the premium positions that cost the most and are hardest to come by. If a starting caliber talent is there at 19 you have to pull the trigger.  I understand the need for a DT and S. I've been on the C and FS train for years. If we weren't staring at a potential Bryce extension, it'd make the decision a lot easier I think. It's just with all these huge contracts I don't see how we can hedge our bets on being able or even wanting to re-sign Walker, especially if he has a bad year. Icky and BC's injuries really hurt our long term plans.  If no blue chip talent at those 3 key positions are available at 19, by all means pass and draft another position. But I think it's pretty safe to say we don't have a guaranteed lock at any of them right now beyond Phillips, and they have to be somewhat of a priority.

      Not completely accurate. I'm sure Roy is lobbying for him and Larry Brown has spoke put in support too. But Hansbrough has made comments pretty critical and hinting at a need for change. Joel Berry has gone a step further and said the standard has not been met. Scott Williams who was a teammate of Hubert's at Carolina has gone all the way and said it's time for a change at head coach.
