Brockers=overrated?

Michael Brockers (6-5/322), LSU - I wrote about Brockers in my Overrated Prospects piece two weeks ago, explaining that his lack of technique covered up his publicized athleticism and resulted in scant production. Since the college season, endless reports have suggested Brockers is a freak athlete that just needs to be refined, even comparing him to Jason Pierre-Paul. I bought into the athlete part, but never saw it on the field. After Brockers' workout it all makes sense; the idea that Brockers is an elite athlete was an absolute myth. He shows little explosion during games and in tests (5.33 forty, 1.77 ten-yard split, 19 bench press reps, 26.5" vertical, 7.46 3-cone, 4.81 shuttle). So now we are left with a player that possesses little to no technique or natural athletic ability, whose lone selling points are length and a thick lower body that produces a solid anchor versus the run. If Brockers is taken in the first 20 picks, he'll be the biggest reach in the 2012 draft.

Thanks for teh Kurb Re-tweeting it. ;) His views on Poe and Brockers has me thinking trading down is our best choice.

Here is his view on Poe btw.

Dontari Poe (6-4/346), Memphis - Poe is a freak of nature and turned in a workout for the ages. His results show 44 bench reps, a 4.87 forty with a 1.68 ten-yard split, 29.5" vertical, and an 8'8" broad jump. I entered the week with Poe as my third defensive tackle and top nose prospect, but the Haloti Ngata comparisons are reaching. I suppose I see it with the footwork and position versatility, but Poe does not have Ngata production. After starting almost every game in three seasons of C-USA competition, Poe had five sacks and 21.5 tackles for a loss. For a freak athlete, that is very poor. Maybe it is a technique or effort issue, but I cannot warrant giving higher than a late first-round grade considering how often Poe ends up on the ground. Poe will likely be drafted higher than that because it's so difficult to find a player of his size and athleticism. I like him, but maybe just not as much as others reacting to his workout only.

Without even looking at the link I'm assuming the article is by Josh Norris. The first line is pretty much exactly what he tweeted several times today...

yeah, that guy has had it out for brockers for quite a while. he couldn't understand what all the hype was about him and asked if someone could help him understand. i offered trying to be nice and he got pissy.

take it for what it's worth. he doesn't know anything more than any of these other clown draftniks out there.

He didn't praise Poe either.......
he doesn't sound like he likes any project.

he got it in his head that he didn't like the guy or the hype and so he's made it his mission to try and discredit him. the combine didn't do much to show him wrong so now he's trying to get people to notice him. he's just like most of these guys trying to get attention. you knock a hyped guy and hope you're right so people will notice you more.

he got his article linked in the huddle so i guess it's working.

The fact is, there isn't a DT who has jumped out and asserted himself as THE GUY. There's no Suh in this draft, just a bunch of dudes. That's a problem when you're talking about drafting a guy in the top 10. The people bitching about Poe jumping almost instantly, need to realize Brockers did the same thing playing part time on a defense FULL of college and maybe even NFL studs....

    • I don't think it was fear of the unknown because he tried to hide the extent of the injuries that made him drop. After the drop, the reports I heard were that teams knew what was wrong with his knee and it was something similar to another athlete from a few years ago (honestly don't remember if it was even a football player).  That it was basically one of those things where he should be fine for a while, there isn't a huge concern of immediate injury risk.   But what he has going on with his knee is something that is degenerative and there's little chance he'll be able to play more than 5 or so years on it before he won't be able to play anymore. So basically it was teams knowing if they draft him, he's probably going to be only a rookie contract player and even if he's great, you might not be able to get use out of him on a second contract.  Which in turn makes the drop make sense, but I'm kinda surprised some contending team didn't take him late in the 1st, hoping he'd put them over the top on a SB run but then not even have to worry about giving him a big contract in 4 years too.
    • Depends if they see the writing on the wall with their roster and contracts and decide to bite the bullet and begin a complete rebuild and roster overhaul.  I have no clue why some franchises (IE us) refuse to do this and keep half assing trying to win 8 games or so.  Do it correctly, take your lumps and build a contender.  We shall see what loomis decides.
    • Each team plays 17 games.  I do not see why they don't just have each team play one international game per year.  Neutral site game, 8 home, 8 away.
