Impossible to be awesome everywhere.....so if you choose to build an uber backfield you accept the fact you won't be ideally strong somewhere. What positions do you think in today's NFL we can be weak at and still win consistently.

According to the patriots, everything besides O-line and QB.

Hard to "build" in all of those areas when you tie up 15% of your total Cap Space in the RB postion....that is the issue.

Under a salary cap, hard decisions must be made. Sometimes you have to sacrifice in an area of great strength to improve in other areas.

when your goal is to build primarily through the draft it's easier. williams' contract will become more manageable in a year or two. i'm not worried about the cap all that much.

i think that cam's gonna be the kind of QB that will end up making WRs look better than what they are. we'll be able to do more with less. on defense, panthers have key pieces locked up for years. they'll be drafting other key pieces in the next couple years. it's just not a concern for me.

cam and the backfield will make it easier for receivers to get their job done. WR corps will build through the draft and on top of the talent we have in house and contracts will be manageable.

i'm just not worried.

Patriots always beat to there own drum. Offensively they have great recieving options....they just have talent to attack differently. Strong recieving options. Welker, Gronk, Hernandez is a great trio and all about creating mismatches. Peyton and Brady have shown a strong passing attack can make up for a lot.

I wonder if the same people who are talking about building the greatest running team of blah blah blah are the same that claimed early last season that it's a passing league and you don't need a strong running game to win.

It's like whatever the Panther have is the secret to winning despite the pesky fact that we aren't winning yet.

meh.....

i've always thought that we should build on our strengths and that we should keep dwill and stewart. tolbert's contract isn't that much of a factor, esp. considering his versatility on offense and STs.

one thing about this becoming more of a passing league is that defenses will be planning for that and will end up making themselves susceptible to the run and receptions out of the backfield. cam's arm and this offense being focused on the deep threat in the passing game will keep defenses spread thin.

if that's the direction they're going, i think it's the right one.

No matter how many runners you have the landslide majority of the time only one is on the field.

I do agree Cam will make others better. But he easily IMO can make a RB look better than a

WR. I don't ever expect Cam to be precision guy. He will need a freak WR and other recieving weapons. While young, you can insert any RB into this offense that fits the scheme and they will have success. Cam's threat of run and pass will make it very easy on a RB.

Heck, look at Mcgahee with The Golden Calf of Bristol. Just worrying about one dimensional The Golden Calf of Bristol let Willis perform well.

My boss who is pretty good pals with JR came up to me and said he had a pretty cool story. Him and his wife had dinner with JR and his wife last week. My boss said he asked some football questions and JR brought up how it was going to be very hard to keep Stew. Said people are going to be upset but with the cap and it being a business somethings just have to happen. He didnt mention a trade but I would doubt he would just let him walk.

He is one thing I don't get. Let's say Carolina can sign a highly effective player for cheap (Tolbert).....that SHOULD be the type scenario that lets you spend extra in other places. Not an excuse spend more money at a position of strength. Tolbert is no Stewart. Williams, Tolbert and Cam is a better ground attack than probably all but 2 teams in the NFL has and you could debate those 2 aren't better

you're only focused on him being an RB. that's the problem.

they're here and more than likely they'll be here for a while. they won't keep this team from building the way it usually builds....through the draft.

Well, I would say most likely they are here for 1 more year.

With Cam Newton.....not even Marty is going to be paying 2 DeAngelo contracts (Stewarts would be more if he stays healthy) to RBs. So If they stay, Stewart either signs for less than Williams or Williams restructures.....neither seems likely

With how the contracts are on the team and I think resigning Smitty will be a higher priority (not saying it should, but it will be if he doesn't retire) It's pretty much impossible to resign Stewart given Carolina's Cap situation for the next 4 seasons. When Cam hits his contract, the team is going to have 7 Players counting almost 80 million against the cap. That leaves 40 million to field the rest of a team of 53 players.

So you don't think Cam, Williams, Tolbert is a top tier rushing attack on its own? Couldn't tell what you thought in that aspect.

Tolbert can play the checkdown/pass protector role just like Stewart did. He did it in SD and had more production than Stewart in that role. So what is being overlooked?
