We Should Hope Bill Parcells Coaches The Saints

Let me explain in no uncertain terms why this would be a GREAT thing for us:

Bill Parcells is first and foremost a defensive-minded coach. The Saints do not have a defensive-minded roster, and Spagunola would find it very difficult to retain his players ear when competing with the potentially Hall of Fame bound Parcells, leading to friction on that side of the ball.

This also becomes an issue when it comes to the offensive system, because at best Parcells will stay completely away from that side of the ball and leave the workload to Carmichael, and at worst (and much more probably given Parcells past forays into meddling on his own teams) Parcells will prefer to instill more of a ball-control offense that is extremely dissimilar from the current Saints schemes. I cannot imagine Bill agreeing to having Brees throwing 50+ times a game when he benched Phil Simms for almost an entire season in favor of a journeyman QB who would follow his marching orders better.

There's also the factor that worked against Joe Gibbs when he returned to the NFL: time away from the game leaves anyone, even the best of coaches, unprepared for just how much the game has transitioned in even the last few years. The team will reflect his philosophies, and they are still set in the 80s and 90s.

The last thing the Saints need is any interruption from the continuity and schemes that they are familiar with: they are a veteran team, and those veterans are already set in their ways and will look at anyone changing what they're comfortable with as undermining the leadership they have to project in the place of Payton. Parcells may be a sexy hire for the media, but he will be an extremely poor fit and will very likely destabilize the Saints even worse than if they promoted from within.

honestly i think with Brees being so heavily involved they'll be fine on offense with Carmichael.

but their offense was never the problem. their defense was already pretty bad, they don't have any early draft picks and free agency wise they've lost more talent on D then they've added. and they're going to have several defensive players facing suspensions on top of having a new defensive coaching staff and scheme.

top 5 offense, bottom of the barrel defense. i'd say 8-8 at best

the loomis suspension was retarded. a GM does next to nothing during the season except maybe scout for the next years draft (which he can still do at home) or work out extensions for players that will be free agents next year (which he will still have plenty of time to do once he comes back)

all the important time of free agency and the draft he'll still be around for, that suspension means almost nothing for their org

One thing. Joe Gibbs coached 4 seasons in his return to the sidelines and had his team in the playoffs two of those 4 seasons. That is something the Redskins did only once before he stepped down to begin with and hasn't happened since so give the old guy some credit.

I think its a good move by the Saints. It lets the coordinators do their jobs without dealing with the everyday BS of being the headcoach. Its going to be a zoo to begin with and Parcells is use to dealing with the media and the spotlight.

8-8? I think that's alittle wishful thinking. Didn't they set the record for most offense ever last season and won like 13 games? The offense looks as good as ever and Lofton IMO is an upgrade over Vilma at this point in his career.

Gibbs had four years. Parcells would presumably get one in very different circumstances. And if you imagine the Tuna would actually take on the head coaching role without tampering with their schemes you're deluded.

brees almost broke the passing record in 2008 and they still went 8-8 with an easy ass schedule. their offense should drop off slightly from losing meachem, no payton, going from nicks to grubbs but not by much.

mainly i just see their defense as being BAD. like close to last in the league type bad. lofton yeah thats fine and all, they still lost numerous free agents on D and have several more guys facing suspensions

lack of overall talent + losing some of their few good players + new scheme + no draft picks + suspensions = that D is gonna SUCK

Lets just agree the offense will be near the top. How many defensive players you thing will get suspended? Adding Bunkley and Lofton are solid upgrades IMO. They lost Porter but he couldn't stay healthy to save his life. To me they are moving out the players they know will have a long suspension and adding quality replacements. As long as the O can score in the 30's the Saints will be just fine.

Well the thing is this kind of punishment has never happened before. Parcells will know his role because he knows he has no future with this team. Hell i doubt he takes the job anyways.
