Claibourne to Bucs

9. Carolina Panthers

* Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis

A pick I'm sticking with. Carolina couldn't stop the run last year while rotating rookies on the interior. They need to find a force that can create stops. Poe has freakish athleticism that will inspire Haloti Ngata comparisons, but what I like here is the versatility. He's not just a 3-4 nose tackle -- he can be a dominant force in the 4-3 as well. Carolina could use a piece in the passing game, but they'll score points. Defense has to be a priority, starting up front.

Wrap it up Coplesailures

Poe is not going to have a Suh like rookie season, he is not worth a 1st round pick in the top ten, that fool is a tool, if our run DEF got better with Shirley, Neblett and Kearse, I don't see DT as a need, especially when we started 2 rookies for 10-11 games..

we still gave up 5.17 yards a carrie when they were end so don't have a party to soon for them.

If we pick Poe it will be because we think he can be a 3 technique guy and play some 5 technique as well. We will not be using him as a nose tackle but more like we used Kris Jenkins. I could see us going with Coples as well. Both would help us out in a 1 gap attacking style.

You have to temper that with the fact that the 5.17 was also a function of a failure by the linebackers and safeties to contain the run to the outsides and stop it for a short gain once they reached the second level. We were actually decent up the middle but bottom of the league once the runner broke through the line. That really didn't improve the whole year.

Do you have the premium DVOA/PFF for that data? Basic DVOA has us at 32nd against the rush.

Yeah when we go to a 3-4 look at times the rushers will widen out to the 5 technique spot. Poe could be effective coming off the edge when we go to a nickel or dime package.

Well yeah, but Rivera/McDermott preferred speed last year in base 3 lineman sets. That's why they'd move Johnson to the 1/2 tech, then have Hardy/random DE flanking.

I don't think you want poe lined up over tackles but it could be interesting. You'd at least seal the edge like a boss.

    • Rags lost again. All is right in the hockey world.
    • He’s responsible for two drafts classes. The first was one of the worst drafts I’ve ever seem. The second one is showing a ton of promise. I’m somewhere between skeptical and hopeful on Morgan.
    • I'm a big fan of Dan. His ability to find productive players deep in the draft will pay off.  I'm going to give him 1.5 draft classes right now, because I do think it's a little unfair to evaluate his first year when he got the job in January, especially when we went into that draft not having a first round pick.  XL and Brooks are still big time TBD players. Both still have incredibly high ceilings, but both have also given us legitimate reasons to have a lot of pause. Trevin Wallace, Chau Smith Wade and Jatavion Sanders have IMO outplayed their draft position early in their careers. That's a great thing. He also got Coker and Demani Richardson as UDFAs that year. Given the situation we were in, I really don't mind the gamble on the high ceiling guys. Still may work out, still may not, but if you made a checklist of ideal situation for an NFL GM to walk into, ours was near the bottom of that list.  Every single 2025 pick is contributing in some way. That typically doesn't happen. I am absolutely blown away by this draft class 6 games in. Even the best GM's miss on occasion, and we can't expect Dan to be 100% on drafts moving forward. Ryan Fitzgerald was an excellent find as well.  Comparing our last two drafts to the previous few is pretty shocking. Can you imagine this season without our Rookies? It would not be good. Additionally, this roster only has 6 players with more than 6 years of experience, and two of those are specialist.  The next step is equally important, and still very much TBD. We have to avoid Cap Chaos.
