I don't know about you guys but the first time he lined up for a field goal it felt like my shoes were on the wrong feet. Just a weird feeling and I had no confidence in him. I've been watching Kasay kick for us since I was 10 years old. (Joe Nedney and Shayne Graham that one year he was hurt). I always took field goals for granted with Kasay. I just assumed they were going in...

Agree my friend. We got spoiled by Kasey & Hurney (JR) screwed the pooch by letting him go too early. I know it was really all about the fact that he could not kick it through the end zone on kickoffs, but what a mistake...Kasey would have been MUCH cheaper too.

This is way out of the ordinary for me, but I am going to mildly defend Mare:

- His contract is not out of line with top 5 kickers in the league.

- His ranking, based on Profootbalfocus (a very reputable site that has a complex grading formula done every week on every player throughout the year), is top 5.

- He should not be missing chipshots for sure. He was the worst from 30-39 yrds & 50+, but again he ranked towards the top of the league overall, no matter how much we all get disgusted by him.

I am by far, not a Mare supporter, but his screw ups early in the year made every thing he did worse. I cussed him out everytime I saw his ugly face.

No need to flame me, I am just stating the facts (that I trust). I can't post them b/c it is a paid membership for premium stats.

It's great he can do kickoffs well but his career FG% is 81 and he was 27th last season. Regardless of his PFF ranking, I refuse to believe he is a top 5 kcicker and should be paid like one.

Part of the reason his stats seem better than they should is because Rivera seemed to lose confidence in him and eventually seemed to not let him kick FGs that might be even a little tough. Good point. I lost confidnece in him by game 3 & that was being generous.

My point is, he is 4% lower than he was before we signed him (not mcuh difference). Is it Mare's fault for being what he is & was...OR... Hurney's b/c he signed a guy with an 82% to a big contract?

I completely think Hurney shouldn't have signed him to that contract and I understand your argument using the stats you gave. I just disagree with PFF ranking. Last season he clearly wasn't top 5 and in his career he has almost as many seasons kicking under 80% (7) as he does kicking above 80%(8). His numbers just don't say top 5 IMO.

His positive grading is pretty much exclusively down to his kickoffs.

If you rank them just on KOs/XPs and remove anyone who played less than half a season - he was ranked 32nd of 36 kickers.

Cap or not cap the fact Mare is our kicker, do you honestly and truley think he wouldn't choke the first chance he gets in postseason? I'd bet money on it. 'Mare the Scare'...cause he scares the poo out of me when he lines up no matter how far.

I'd have a fuging heart attack relying on him for winning a post season game at the last second, and that is something that happens quite often.

He's not had a good year since 2008.

Think of kicking a bit like putting in golf - usually the older you get the more you tend to choke on those 5-10 footers. He's had a lot of moderately high profile misses in his career and that is inevitably going to affect his confidence come game time.

Sad fact is, we are paying a lot of money for a slight upgrade over Rhys Lloyd.

Mare can kick the ball well, but the he no longer has the confidence to get over missing crunch time kicks.
