Lonnie Harvey DT-exclusive somewhat interview

I think this guy has a good chance of making it at least to our practice squad. I actually texted him last night talking about how DT is a open competition and he responded saying "thanks, im gonna make it. happen believe that!!". He's got good push through the line and is a big body guy. Here's a highlight reel and a video of him doing combine drills on campus (which he happens to list his phone number, may want to change that, no im not a stalker)....

gary gibson will be gone, there are no given starters in Meeks style of D. Nick Hayden may not make it, except for practice squad. I kind of assumed it was an open competition.

this is still fox team..the starter will be kemo and lewis..with a lot of rotaition..i dont like it but thats the way it is

i like this guy. he would be good solid depth behind kemo. he has an incredible work ethic. i love what he has done to try and get his weight down...well. i love the dedication. he ate a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast and a can of tuna for lunch and from what i could tell that is all he had. most likely he lost some muscle mass if that was all he was eating but still, he wants to be good and i think all he needs is the right program to take advantage of his potential and teach him what he wants/needs to know to be good.

i hope he works out. a guy with that bulk could be good clogging up the interior.

Kemo, Lewis and in all likelihood - unless he's Attiyah Ellison II - Irvin are set.

Behind that there's at least one spot, maybe two.

This guy has as good a chance as anybody else that's up for it.

He was a HUGE reach that will bite us in the ass. Roy Miller was still on the board for christ sake!

there are a lot of things about irvin that i like and i think that he is another one that has tons of potential that just needs the right program to make the most of it. hurney said that they were someone that they had been looking at since september or october. this was his first chance to start in a big program and came to them pretty raw. had he been given another year to perform we might have seen him get a lot better.

right now, though, he and harvey both are in the best situation possible. what remains to be seen is if we can get out of of them what our scouting department saw in them. i'm willing to believe that we can. harvey will be the bigger challenge but still, i'm willing to give them a chance and withhold judgment until we can see what they do in minicamps and TC.

i don't want us to stop at these guys, though...i want us to bring in quite a few more guys to battle it out for the DT spots. based on where these two guys are coming from, i'm going to be pulling for them.

    • A rookie that has never played a snap and a proven 1000K NFL WR are not going to be viewed the same in these type rankings.  And calling draft picks, lotto picks, isn't some new quip I just invented.  take the big 3 Hubbard, AT, insert whatever 3rd Panther you want vs Kamara, Hill, Olave.  Most football folks outside of Carolina are picking the Saints there IMO.
    • You didn’t really address the point, just like you ignored the point about the RBs initially, and saying “they are all lotto picks” is just a really silly reduction because you could say that about literally any player rookie or vet every snap, every game, every year. It is well known that different positions have different hit rates, and I would argue different types of prospects within position groups as well, and that hit rates change the further down in the draft you go. Everybody knows QB is different and that, for example, first round OL have a really high success rate. Using your lotto ticket analogy…again…you are saying a lotto ticket with a 1 in 100 chance of hitting is the exact same thing as a lotto ticket with a 1 in 2 chance of hitting (this is an example, don’t take these odds literally). The point was he is no more of a lotto ticket than the 31yr old receiver coming off a major knee injury, and in my opinion he is better odds with a higher potential “jackpot”. Saying one player is an “lotto ticket” while another isn’t is just not sound logic. You have no idea who will break out, regress, get injured, etc. There are safer bets than others, that’s all. I don’t think Diggs is a safe bet and even if he was, weighing him over all of the Panthers WRs plus 2 1k rushers is just dumb. You can disagree if you want. The list is stupid.
    • Yeah, this is all projections of how it will turn out. Inevitability this list will look ridiculous in a full 2025 sesson hindsight, most likely. Still, I am pretty surprised that so many bristled at being thought of as having very, very lowly ranked WR and TE units. We literally have been for years. All you have to do is just have things stay the same and those are immediately bottom 5 units. It is easy to see why one would be reticent to have lofty expectations in the preseason. Gotta show it first when you are a perennial cellar dweller. That's just life at the bottom.
