Panthers Pressure Point: Sean Mcdermott

Recommended Posts

Meh he had the talent in Philly and that's the real truth. He has lots of good ideas just sometimes picks the wrong time to use them. Working under Rivera is prob the best thing that could have happened to him. Rivera knows how to call a game and use his personal the right way. I will say this though, if Kuechly is what he seems to be then we will be a major headache to any team. Not cause of the blitz but because of his coverage.

Having Beason and or Luke dropping back in coverage, could be sick, I was just watching game rewind, and just watching Beason stride for stride vs Doucet, Hightower and I can't forget who else he covered down field in the 2010 ARZ game and broke up the pass, been watching certain games over the last 3 years for the last couple of days just ordered it, its only $14.99 a month.

Def can dial up some confusing blitz with that combination.

I was always felt that Sean got thrown under the bus in Philly. I thought he was going to do a lot better in Carolina, but last year was a disappointment.

Obviously, if our defense sticks... he's done. You really can't argue that.

I will say that most great defenses - like shut down defenses - are built around a low scoring offense that pounds the ball and runs down the clock. The whole point of a defense that just destroys another team is having them running on all four cylinders. When your team has a high power offense that scores quickly and puts the defense back on the field because they can rest, it just doesn't work.

It's just when I think of great defenses, that is normally the system in place. Don't get wrong, I love Newton and think he's exciting to watch but you sort of having to take on with the other.

McDermott has been snakebitten with linebacker injuries since he took over as a head DC. Look at 2009 and 2010 in Philly and you see a shuffling of defensive players at linebackers each week. Then he comes here and the same thing happens. Sean will be the first to tell you that he has not had the personnel to run his defense the past couple of years. He has had to back off the aggressiveness and run a more vanilla scheme because of it. His defense is based on high accountability with everyone having to play their position or there are major holes which can be easily exploited.high risk and high reward but so far we have seen the risk without the reward. It is also high reward but high risk of giving up big plays if you don't get to the quarterback.

We were 4 defensive players away from being decent last year. A NT, 2 LBs and a second corner. I think with players coming back and additions we have addressed everything if Hogan is decent this year. I think this year will be a significant improvement over last when players will actually have an off-season to learn the defense and figure out where they need to be on every play. If we can actually keep the same lineup on the field for 2 weeks in a row, we will be able to actually run the scheme. I expect this team to be as explosive on defense as were on offense last year.

We were not a quick score offense. We had the most 80 yard drives in the league and our time of possession was 30:15 to 29:45 in favor of the offense. Look at Pittsburgh. Their time of possession was 31:06 to 29:05 or 40 less seconds on defense per game.

Go back and look at his 1 season as the Philly DC. He didn't have the talent. He was a scapegoat. Philly got thin and weak on D talent....LB corp and secondary players were weak. JJ 43 is about more than having a DE.

He has been asked to patchwork a D and play vanilla as a DC. Give him the talent and his work under JJ will show
