Direct, Dish or AT&T

I'm not trying to get involved in this tiff between you guys, but I thought the optical connection on the back of the box was always for audio?

No tiff between us just correcting someone that says they do this for a living. He stated "Fiber optic means your signal is transmitted directly to your tv box utilizing a laser beam" which is not true as there is no set top box that has a fiber input/output besides audio so by his very definition of what makes Uverse a hybrid makes Fios a hybrid. There has to be coax or twisted run in some form through the house. ATT Uverse offers FTTN (fiber to the node) and FTTP (fiber to the prem just like Fios) just really depends on where you live. For someone that says he installs this service daily really should know what hes talking about.

Uverse isnt coax at all to the side of your house that would be cable. Techs might use the cable you have already in your house for the tv service. Most RG6 line or cat5 have little to no drop in bandwith for your TV service. installers have a meter to check this to be sure there is no noise on the line or drops when they do the installation.

Correct. A lot of very high end car audio also uses optics. Verizon FiOS internet uses optics, & AT&T is a hybrid of fiber optic & coaxial cable.

Incorrect. Both companies use fiber optics. Both companies have FTTP just not in every area and ATT takes advantage of that by offering FTTN the areas it doesnt. Honestly, I would love to have either straight to my house but I have Uverse FTTN which offers up to 24 down with my package. For the price I pay I dont need anything more then that right now. Most people dont. Verizon Fios isnt offered anywhere near here but I hear they are up to 50 down with Fios service. Hell I think Time Warner here in Charlotte offers in some areas 50 down and thats not even with laser beams!!! ;)

My wife and I recently cut the cord on the satellite TV and haven't been happier since then, especially since we've got an ever growing media server thanks to teh Internetz.

I'm tossing around the idea of getting a PS3 to stream Sunday Ticket, but since that doesn't include any primetime/Monday/Thursday games, I'm thinking of maybe purchasing the smallest cable package at my office and streaming from there to home.

Anyone already do something like that?

Like I said, according to their coverage map, the people across the street from me can use it, but I am out of range apparently. I would love to switch to ATT UVerse internet. For about 5 dollars less a month I would get a few mbs more on the download speed.

UVerse is horrible for anyone who is a "heavy user" since they have a data cap. They also include TV usage against the data cap.

Hmm, any idea what speed it gives? I might have to look into it.

Its not great, but not terrible either.

They advertise 6MBPS/512, but of course your mileage may vary.

I test it on occasion, and download is usually between 4-6 mbps

upload is around.40 mbps

I pay 40 bucks or so per month, but it is bundled with my phone.

Your incorrect Uverse TV usage is not counted against the cap. The cap is 250gb a month for uverse and $10 for every 50gb after. So unless your running a seedbox I doubt you will have a issue even as a "heavy" user. lol http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/13/atandt-will-cap-dsl-u-verse-internet-and-impose-overage-fees/?utm_medium=referral

I stream a lot of 720p video through youtube and twitch, I'm well over 250gb a month and I don't torrent.

I ave had all 3 over the years and TWC, now.

TWC=sucks. No NFL channel, fear channel and cvhiller channel have to extra to get. customer sucks.

DirecTV- I loved for the NFL package, but they are dropping AMC. So I will not be getting them. Had them about 10 years ago.

AT&T I liked, had all the channels I like and I nevr had a problem. Unfortuanly, I live in an apart complex where I can not get it back at this time. Thus had to go back to TWC ( which is the last cable company that resues to add thge NFL network).

Dish I had back in the mid 90's, so can't really make a review on them now.

My choice would be AT&T, unless Direct gets thier head out of thier backside and keeps AMC.

Just depends what is important to you, lol.
