ESPN: Doubters drove RG3 to elevate game

It takes a special and unique individual like RG3 to carry his team into the spotlight. .

It also takes a "special and unique individual" to start for one season and carry his team to a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP and win basically every award imaginable.

You are also neglecting the conference play. RG3 played some quality teams in the B12 but they weren't SEC teams. I also think RG3 lost 3-4 games last year. I know he lost against nationally ranked OK State and Texas AM.

Stanford for that matter will never be consider football powerhouses.

LOL. Not that anyone needs any more proof that you don't know what you're talking about, but this should do it.

"Powerhouse" isn't quite the word I would use to describe Stanford, but they are a an outstanding football program. Top notch.

We will see how far they fall with Luck gone.

We will see how far they fall with Luck gone.

And we will see how well Baylor does with RG3 gone. Something tells me Stanford will fair a lot better than Baylor, lol.

Stanford did pretty damn well for themselves after losing their HC to the NFL last season.

PS: Phil Steele, quick...go google him Grits, has Stanford #18 nationally in his preseason rankings. Sure, we're still a couple months away from college FB, but he doesn't have Baylor ranked in his top 50.

He's also projecting Stanford to be ranked #20 in the preseason AP polls.

If you truly don't believe Stanford is a legitimate, big time FB program than you are a complete moron.

The hate for Cam Newton last year was the most I've ever seen for a first round QB, ever. You're probably twice my age and I have a feeling you'd probably agree with me on this. Look at the huddle last year FFS. I'd probably say it was AT LEAST 2 against 1 in favor of drafting someone else.

I was at a Wedding at the Peninsula last July and the table I sat at had about 11 people there, 5 of which were guys including myself. All sports fans. most of them said that Cam would be a bust and I should note that the biggest Cam hater at the table was a 30 something black dude who was an Eagle fan.

I remember telling them that if Cam is the type of person who is highly motivated from people saying he "can't" do something then he will basically have an unlimited amount of fuel for his fire during his rookie season. they mostly agreed with this and turns out I was right.

the hate/criticism for RG3 is no where near the amount Cam had this time last year. Honestly, I could probably count on one hand the amount of "expert" criticism I've heard about RG3. This is true and you know it!

Sadly, what ESPN and others are trying to do is pretend that RGIII is being treated like Cam but they know he isn't. Unfortunately judging by the person who started this thread, there are those who want to believe that they are being treated the same.

NOT..

The only thing RG3 and Cam have in common is the color of their skin. Griffin doesn't have the size and body mass to take the hits like Cam does. I'd compare RG3 to Vick (which isn't a bad comparison by any means, and RG3 is certainly more mature than Vick was) and Cam to Rothlisburger. One of these guys can take a beating, one of them can't. I think everyone here will be surprised if Vick makes it through the season healthy.

Go and compare Cam's schedule at AU to RG3 at Baylor. Cam also won a NC in his only season as a starter. RG3 took three years to develop the Baylor football program and has been a starter since day 1.

Also, Baylor had a WR get drafted in the first round right? and a RB taken in the second or third?

Most of Cam's go to guys we're late round draft picks and UDFA.

You can shape your stats to fit your argument, but until RG3 gets on the field and plays, no one knows what's going to happen.

And sadly, that is the only reason why they are being compared..

It's way easier to compare and hype RGIII over Cam despite what Cam has done than hype RGIII over Luck...Even if many in the media know in their hearts that RGIII is better, just like they did with Cam over Blaine, they will not accept it simply because Luck represents their son..

Yeah only the head coaches and AP writers that continue to vote them into top 25 every year.

For the years Luck was there, sure.

I can't find any list of them in the top 25 programs of the decade, of the last 40 years, anything.

2002...unranked. (USC 4 AP, 4 USA; Wash St. 10,10 Colorado 20,21)

2003...unranked. (USC 1,2; Wash St. 9,9)

2004...unranked. (USC 1,1; Cal 9,9; ASU 19,20)

2005...unranked. (USC 2,2; Oregon 12,12; UCLA 16,13; Cal 25,25)

2006...unranked. (USC 4,4; Cal 14,14; Oregon St 21,22)

2007...unranked. (USC 3,2; ASU 16,13; Oregon 23,24; Oregon St 25,U)

2008...unranked. (USC 3,2; Oregon 10,9; Oregon St 18,19; Cal U,25)

2009...unranked. (Oregon 11,11; USC 22,20)

Holy poo, real powerhouse before the Luck era.

2010...4,4 (Oregon 3,3)

2011...7,7 (Oregon 4,4; USC 6, U)

So if by "Vote them into the top 25 every year" you meant for the two years Luck was there, sure, I agree.

If not, you are a fuging retard.

    • I have never seen this cat play a single snap of football, BUT, I really hope that we're not counting on a 25 yo, UDFA who played 6 years of college ball to suddenly replace our starting LB.  Sounds to me like Dean Jones needed a story and didn't have anything else to write about. Wishing the guy luck though, cool nickname.
    • I'll go 1 further than that. This 23 year old had spent 4 years as a middle of the pack college player before exploding onto the scene as a 5th year senior, then we have enough faith in him to trade up 1 spot so that we can get a 5th year option and guarantee his salary. So in about a year's time he went from a mid round pick to a first rounder. It would be hard NOT to let that go to your head! I'm going to trust that the staff know what they're doing with XL and not give him too much crap about being a dumbass LAST season, as long as he doesn't continue to be one.
    • From Brugler's scouting report... Tavareon “Bam” Martin-Scott picked up his nickname because of the fireworks celebration he typically receives to celebrate his birthday. He grew up playing pee wee football in Fort Wayne, Ind., but developed late and was mostly a part-time player until his senior year at Snider High (alma mater of Jessie Bates). He posted 87 tackles and 6.0 sacks as a senior in 2018, but it wasn’t enough to put him on the recruiting radar. A no-star recruit, he played two seasons with Dodge City (Kan.) Community College and then received several SEC offers. His playing time and production gradually increased each season for the Gamecocks, and he put intriguing flashes on film. Martin-Scott is a good-sized athlete, with pursuit speed to match races to the perimeter. He competes with a banger mentality to pinball off blocks and stay determined on his path to the ball. Overall, Martin-Scott freelances a tad too much with inconsistent steps in coverage, but he is a classic run-and-hit linebacker who likes to play loose and chase plays — necessary ingredients for NFL special teams. grade: Free Agent
