Less than three months away from the much-anticipated sequel to Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton's marquee rookie year, all signs point to another box-office smash.

Although Newton favors striking a Superman pose on the field, when it comes to action-hero encores his goal should be stacking up to blockbuster movies The Dark Knight and Spider-Man 2. Newton set the bar high in his debut by throwing for 4,051 yards, rushing for another 706 and producing 35 total touchdowns.

Newton made that single bound despite a lengthy NFL lockout that kept him from getting the typical full offseason program in 2011. Now that he is immersed into 2012, he has become a sponge.

"He's just going to be more comfortable," Panthers tight end Greg Olsen said. "It's tough, especially as a young quarterback, getting thrown into the fire in the middle of training camp, but he did an amazing job handling it last year."

This summer, a few days before Newton takes the field in camp, there will be another installment in the Batman series. But Newton's second season really has the feel of the sooner-to-be-released Spider-Man flick—a thrilling reboot rather than just the next chapter.

Now that his secret identity as one of the league's most talented quarterbacks has been revealed, Newton is about to face a tougher rogues gallery — getting the best of what defenses can throw at him. There is good reason, however, to think he'll keep getting better.

i'm sure he got the best at what defenses had last year. having a year to prepare won't have them anymore prepared to face a cam newton with a year of experience in the nfl and the system with a full offseason with his coaches and teammates to prepare.

Saying there is some secret defensive strategy to beat Cam Newton is just ludicrous and untrue, we saw every type of different defense last year and everybody tried everything in their books to stop the guy. Ever since Cam's debut every DC in the NFL changed things up against him. The defensive strategy to beating Cam is the same as a guy like Brees or Rodgers, just play really good defense. It's not special trick. Tennessee was the only team really successful in shutting down Cam and they didn't do anything fancy. They played very disciplined, dominated the trenches and covered well. They were almost always playing a standard cover 2.

this. by the last half of the season teams had seen everything they needed to see to know what cam was capable of, and by the end of the season he was routinely handling everything thrown at him. game planning is trumped by execution every time, and cam has shown the ability to consistently execute.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
