I fully expect this to be a blasphemous statement but I think I'd still take Luck over Newton if Indy offered a straight up trade. I am almost entirely confident Andrew Luck is the next Manning/Brady. Newton had the best rookie season of any QB ever, but rookie years are not what careers are made of. However, he certainly has the potential to be something like we've never seen if he keeps his head in the game. Newton is beyond great, but this thread seems to indicate we went to the playoffs last year and/or are doing awesome this year. While I think we're going to come out firing, I am hesitant to get ahead of myself here.

I can't be the only one on here that thinks that either.

I respect your opinion but would like to give you a few things to think about. Before we get into that, though, I'll say it wouldn't surprise me if Luck consistently puts up a really good completion percentage, as he does appear to be an unusually accurate thrower.

But back to your overall point...you state you are confident of what Luck will become and do that with no sample to review of his performance in the NFL. So I assume your feeling is based either on his college performance, or on measurables, or a combination of both. Can we agree that measurables are often a poor predictor of performance?

So I'm assuming you have made your conclusion based on what Luck has shown on the field. There is no doubt; he has been very good. However, he has not performed as well as Newton, in spite of playing in what is generally considered a weaker conference, and in spite of being surrounded by more talent. As to the latter point, off the top of my head, Luck played with Fleener and Martin, both high picks (2nd round) in the recent draft. Unless I'm mistaken, Lee Ziemba, currently on IR for Carolina was the only drafted player from Auburn other than Cam, and he was a 7th rounder.

I feel some people are being influenced heavily by pre-draft analysis, and not putting nearly enough weight to the actual on field accomplishments of Cam in his first year.

And yes, Luck has looked good in his preseason action, but so has Russell Wilson, along with RG3 and even to some extent, Ryan Tannehill. What isn't certain for any of these guys is what they show in regular season games. Until then, for my money, saying a 2012 rookie QB is going to be better than Cam is just as ludicrous as someone saying a year ago that Cam was going to be better than Peyton Manning or Tom Brady.

It's going to be fun watching this play out.

That is fair. I'm not saying he is or isn't better than Cam. I'm just saying I would without a doubt trade Cam for Luck in about 2 seconds as it stands today. You're right, no one has seen Luck in the regular season. And he may end up having a mediocre first season (not unlike other rookies, see: Manning, 1998) and/or very well a career. But I doubt it.

What I would say is this, Luck has had 4 years of D1 major conference experience. Cam played effectively one year of major college football and one year in the pros. He never played in college with material scouting tape and he's never played in the pros with a full season of tape. If he does just as well this year as last, then I would surely retract this statement. But I am reserving judgment until then. A lot of scouts I follow that people in the NFL seem to trust have nothing but positive things to say about Newton now, but I think they still ALL agree if they could have a 2012 NFL Draft with Luck/Newton even know what we know now, Luck still goes #1.

Generally speaking, I also think Luck would be a better "when times aren't great" leader. I hope Cam keeps his head up better this year.

Just my 2 cents. It will indeed be fun watching it play out. I wish them both (especially Newton) the best.

Luck had a chance to be a panther. He pretty much told the entire panther nation to go fug themselves. So he can go fug himself if you ask me. Will he be good.......probably. But believe it or not lots of QB's that were the greatest QB EVER coming out of college tuned out to be terrible, bad or just mediocre.

Saying you would prefer a guy who has never played a down in the NFL over the guy who had the best rookie season of any QB to play in the NFL...........I don't know what that is, but logic plays no part in it. Im guessing you are harboring some type of dislike of Cam that has nothing to do with his ability or production.

Again I don't care if Luck wins 10 superbowls in a row. He made it very clear that he would prefer to play for any team in the league and, very likely a perennial bottom dweller, than to come to Carolina. Cam wanted to play here and he is here and kicking butt. I can't believe this is even a discussion.

Cam > Luck. Those who make comments about trading Cam for Luck will eat those words. Cam is stronger and plays with more heart. Luck may turn out as "the next can't miss" QB prospect, but Cam has changed the game. I like Luck and I admit that I was disappointed when we missed out on getting him. But - I'm proud of OUR QB and would NOT consider trading a future HOF QB for a college standout.

You are welcome to that opinion, but let me present to you why you might want to reconsider.

1. Luck has yet to prove what he can do in a real NFL game. Cam has. Granted Luck has looked good in the preseason, but at this point he's still unproven.

2. Cam has a full year of NFL experience. That alone puts us one year closer to the superbowl in my opinion.

3. Cam has a will and desire to be great that is still unseen with Luck. Do you think Cam would have stayed for his senior year? No, because Cam lives, sleeps, and breaths football.

4. Cam will be the superstar Charlotte and the Panthers need. History has shown one transcendent player plus championships can put a team and town on the map. People gave Cam crap about wanting to be an entertainer and icon, but we need some of that superstar shine in Charlotte.

5. Cam has the potential to be a transformatative athlete. The level of debate and vitriol Cam faced coming out of college is an indication to me the NFL still has not fully embraced black QBs. Cam has a chance to change that, and on some levels already has. Just look at how RGIII was treated compared to Cam.

In short, Cam > Luck.

What is so ironic about the direction this thread is going in that some of the same people stating that Cam is better than Luck, or otherwise prefer Cam over Luck because Luck hasn't played a single down in a regular season game are the same folks who were creaming themselves 1.5 years ago when Luck was considering coming out..but chose to stay in college.

He hadn't played a single down in ANY NFL game at that time (preseason or otherwise) and yet 95% of this board were (as mentioned) already anointing him god and how if he came to Carolina the heavens would open and we would have superbowl wins instantly. Too bad we cant go back and look at some of those threads....

I don't know which of the two will turn into the greater QB over the years and frankly don't care. I care that we finally have a young and able QB of our own to develop....but man at the irony of some of these posts....
