Because for the true diehard fans, like myself, you know that an opening loss has always meant more disappointment down the road. For those of you that missed it, the odds are very much against us:

Since the NFL went to a 16-game schedule, 52.7 percent of teams that won their season opener went on to make the playoffs. Just 23.6 percent of opening-game losers landed in the playoffs.

In the Panthers’ 17-year history, the correlation has been even stronger. Carolina has dropped 11 openers, and just once – in 2005 – did that season end in a playoff appearance.

Those numbers are intriguing to be sure, but they won’t mean a thing if the Panthers open with a victory and don’t advance to postseason play.

This opener, however, might be even more important than trends suggest.

First of all, it’s against a division opponent, specifically the division doormat last season. The Panthers’ strong finish in 2011 included a pair of lopsided victories over the Buccaneers, so a loss could be difficult to bounce back from.

And while the Panthers’ coaches can’t afford to look beyond the Buccaneers, fans can’t help but take a peek. What follows are games against a trio of teams that all made the playoffs last season, including a visit by the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants.

On both sides of the Giants game, the Panthers will face their other NFC South rivals, taking on the New Orleans Saints**** to open the home schedule and visiting the Atlanta Falcons.

Even playoff-caliber teams could lose all three of those games, though it would be unlikely they could recover to reach the playoffs if that actually happened.

In the Panthers’ case, an 0-3 stretch would be that much harder to overcome given that two of those opponents are in their division. An 0-3 stretch after losing the opener? Forget about it.

Why can't we ever just get it right from the jump? This is so frustrating. I keep hope alive until we are mathematically out of it, but this isn't just one game... It's the tone-setter for the rest of the season, and it's no coincidence that there is a huge correlation between losing it and missing the playoffs. I can't begin to express how disappointed I am in our team and coaching staff after today. Just embarrassing. Schiano? The Bucs... Smh... No excuses.

Why can't we ever just get it right from the jump? This is so frustrating. I keep hope alive until we are mathematically out of it, but this isn't just one game... It's the tone-setter for the rest of the season, and it's no coincidence that there is a huge correlation between losing it and missing the playoffs. I can't begin to express how disappointed I am in our team and coaching staff after today. Just embarrassing. Schiano? The Bucs... Smh... No excuses.

You know I always have been Kurb... But, it's just getting old now. Every year we come out and do the same thing, and we always end up right here again. "Don't worry guys, we just had a bad game. We'll be better next week and make the playoffs." And we don't. It's like we're becoming Cleveland Browns-south. Year after year of failing to meet expectations and losing. Sprinkle in a few winning seasons over 17, and it'll keep us happy.

Go to a Browns message board and see what they think of that.

I still seem light on the horizon.

It's not going to happen over night and it rarely does.

I hate losing probably more than anyone on this board, but its not time to burn the stadium down just yet.

      I honestly feel bad for Willis. I mean, good that he got a decent (NFL QB speaking) payday and will be set for life, but in terms of actually competing and providing he's a legit starter? The Dolphins are gonna carry $175M in dead cap this year and they have an out in Willis' contract after the 2027 season. This seems like the most obvious tank job in history with Willis signed as cover for it.

      I was scrolling X (Twitter) and I came across this clip....If I shows up here I'd be shocked.  Anyway it was supposed to highlight the blocking ability of Antonio Williams.  All I noticed is how well Blake Miller moved on pulls and in space.  I'm thinking it should be Miller Time in Carolina.       I am using Kelce more as an example of what people think you get with a 1st round TE.    3 f the top 4 yardage guys of all time are 1st rounders. I think. But realize these would be the guys with super long careers, and/or top QBs throwing to them. We don’t have a top QB.    And there have been Plenty of first round disappointments too. More of them than the all time leaders for sure.    We were treating Bryce as the ultimate ‘don’t fug it up’ game manager in order to get a few of those 8 wins. And to stay close in some losses.   1st round picks, starting in 2023 that have been used on a WR or on the QB? 2023 1 (qb) 2024 2 (1 & 32) (qb, wr) 2025 1 (wr) When does it stop?
