The Steve Smith can do no wrong talk is a bit much

Hey genius, Smith was gone from this team before Cam got here. It was Cam's influence that kept Smith here. Had Cam not reached out to Smith and talked him into staying, there would be no Smith on the Panthers. Cam didn't get "stuck" with Smith, Cam wanted Smith around and it's because of his own influence that Smith is here. Get a fuging clue.

Smith has credited Rivera keeping him here, not Cam.

After the Georgia native acknowledged he grew up a Falcons fan, Newton stressed he wanted to go to Carolina because it had the top pick. Then Newton turned to Smith and said, ''And I wanted to have someone great to throw to.''

Asked later if he was lobbying for the four-time Pro Bowl receiver to stay in Carolina, Newton smirked.

''Hopefully, he got the message,'' Newton said.

It was hard to tell.

When tests ruled out lupus and his wife's condition improved, Smith eyed football again. He attended one day of the Panthers' player-organized workouts last week, catching passes from Newton for the first time.

Smith was impressed.

''His athleticism speaks for itself,'' Smith said. ''You can see an athlete walk in the door. He doesn't have to wear a sign or a jersey. You can tell if a guy can play or if he can't.''

That's praise the sometimes volatile Smith has been hesitant to give other QBs.

Newton likely would be in better shape if he had Smith as a target. So right after Newton replied ''time will tell'' to a kid's bold question of whether he'll be better than ex-Panthers QB Jake Delhomme, he made it clear he wants Smith to stick around.''If that was the message,'' Newton said, smiling, ''I'm just going to leave it at that.''

Cam Newton openly lobbied for Panther wide receiver Steve Smith to stay with the team Friday at Smith's football camp at Ardrey Kell High in Charlotte.

Newton, the rookie quarterback from Auburn whom the Panthers picked No.1 in April, worked the camp for Smith. During a Q and A with the approximately 260 campers, Newton was asked both if he would be a better quarterback than Jake Delhomme -- "Time will tell," he said -- and what team he wanted to be drafted by in April.

Newton said the Panthers, since they had the No.1 pick and he wanted to go first. Then he added, "And I wanted to have someone great to throw it to and I knew Steve Smith was here, right?"

I told Newton later during his brief media availability that sounded like he really wanted Smith to stay.

"That's how yall got it?" Newton said playfully. "That was the message -- and I'm just going to leave it at that. Hopefully he got the message -- and the memo, too."

Newton and Smith have bonded through some text messages and phone calls and Newton also threw some passes to Smith during the one day Smith came to the Panthers' players-only camp and proclaimed then Smith was "at another level."

Smith said at his camp that he had contemplated retirement when his wife Angie had a health scare recently. Doctors thought she might have lupus (she does not -- Smith told our Joseph Person last week that Angie was instead diagnosed with mononucleosis).

"Retirement at that time was one of the things we were thinking about," said Smith, who has two years left on his current Panther deal, " because i needed to be home with my wife. I needed to make sure that i didn't let her down. And now that process has passed, we're thankful for that and now we're going to sit down and talk about things that are less important than her health."

One of those is football. Smith said he plans to play somewhere in 2011 -- he wouldn't say whether he wants it to be with the Panthers. He has reportedly asked the Panthers to trade him.

But the bonding with Newton can't hurt the Panthers' cause, if they decide not to trade him once the NFL lockout ends and instead keep him. Smith has been very impressed with Newton, he said.

"His athleticism speaks for itself," Smith said. "You can see an athlete walk in the door. He doesn't have to wear a sign or a jersey. You can tell if a guy can play or if he can't."

More on this in Saturday's Observer and online in my full-length column about Newton and Smith.

I applaud him for doing that. He did the same to Jimmy. Why does he have to be different towards Cam? Just because it's Cam? Forget that.

Smith is known for these type of things, why are people even bothered by it?

Because Cam has already been drug through the mud by the media. Did any of his teammates tell the media about his THIRD teammate he punched that the Panthers tried so desperately to keep in-house?

I bet you if that was Cam yelling at Steve he would have blew the hell up, Steve even cost us a game last year with his holding call, did Cam tell the media what a STUPID penalty that was and he costed the game? No. Instead he put it all on HIM, Cam has always taken responsibility for our losses.

Steve NEVER HAS. AND NEVER WILL.

There's more than one player on the team, and I highly doubt Steve was the only one upset about the game.

Yeah that sure helped Jimmy out a lot didn't it.

I agree with this post. #89 is the Greatest Panther Of All Time but the way he handled this was pretty poor. And it sounds like Jordan Gross echoed what I said a few days ago. I have no problem with what #89 said, but going to the media with it was weak as fug. Hanging your QB out to dry like that is weak. Cam Newton had no problem winning before he came to Carolina. Now he's being raked over the coals for not smiling and losing gracefully enough. We've got too many vets on our team who are paid like pro bowlers that dont' show up week to week and come off OK with losing. Vets who proclaimed we're going to the Super Bowl now playing like poo and not being held accountable for it. Yet we expect our 2nd year young QB who isnt even our highest paid player to carry the load. Be Supercam every week, and dont make a mistake! Its not a good situation.

I agree. The media would have never known what Steve had said, UNTIL Smith ran his mouth to the media. I'm also sure Rivera was not happy.

It's weird for me. I really don't like anything about the situation. I think I've been defending Smith from the point of view of "this is what you expect from Smith", ie. he's going to give you a truthful answer when asked a question. Smith has never, not even once, said "no comment" to anything that I can remember.

In regards to the actual situation...I don't like any of it. I don't like Smith yelling at Cam, and I don't like the comments to the media. I've never been a fan of angry negative reinforcement, like yelling at Cam on the sideline for example. It would be one thing to firmly talk to Cam and tell him that he needs to be up there next to Jimmy absorbing the rest of the game. Remind him that he's a leader. But to yell at him in front of everyone does nothing but undermine any type of leadership that he might have already built.

Cam should have listened to Smith and gotten up, then later, in the locker room for instance, called out Smith and told him never to publicly deface his authority. By passively taking an aggressive berating, Cam is just setting himself up to lose all authority. It's one thing to be mentored and told that you are handling things wrong by a team veteran. It's another to be humiliated in front of the team that you are supposed to be leading.
