Cam: an option QB

It's not just you. I don't get it either.

Cam cannot scan the field when he is doing a 5 or 7 step drop. It's not like the defenders stand still until he's completed his drop back, so having him in the gun gives him more time, not less. And we still can run play action from the gun, just the mechanics of the fake are a bit different.

We can do both, under center I formation runs and play actions, and passing and RO out of the gun.

I'm guessing Rodgers, Brees, Manning and Brady shouldn't drop back bc they're taking 5-7 step drop. They all should runs an option system too bc they'll be even faster at scanning the field.

Watch more football. All of those guys spend a lot of time in the shotgun.

They don't run an option because their QB's don't run like Cam. This really isn't that difficult.

I never said I didn't want a shotgun formation. Just take away the options. Mix it in here and there but don't base your offense (passing/running) on the options. It's not just killing Cam but it's killing our backs too.

I would like to see more 4 and 5 WR sets myself. We hardly ever spread a team out.

We pretty much did that all game against Tampa, with 3 WR's, Olsen going out on nearly every down, and sometimes sending someone out of the backfield.

The result? Our O-line was overwhelmed and we couldn't run or pass.

Cam's 34(?) yard gallop on an option play early on says stfu. Also, most of Williams' yards came on options so far this season.

Seriously, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. What, are we going to scrap inside zone too? That doesn't work. What about 4 verticals? Hardly ever seems to get anybody truly open. What about SOME of our screen plays? If you start scrapping every play that SOMETIMES fails, you end up with no plays at all. This is football. No play is a sure thing. Ever.

Are we using it TOO much? Yes, we are. Should we back off of it a little? Yes, we should. But this "scrap the play" talk is ridiculous. Like any play, when it's executed properly, it's a BIG play for us.

Thats still a 3WR set with the RB wide. I would like to give pilares and AE a shot at some point instead of the same two formations all day.

My point was that consistently sending 4 to 5 out on pass patterns did not leave enough blockers for effective protection in both the passing and running game.

Spread can be effective but you have to get the ball out really quickly. Cam is not quite at that point. And of course defenses can take a chance with a soft zone to prevent the big play, send 6, and blow it up.

As to Pilares, I'm a big fan. He has stepped up every time his number's been called. It's really nice to see him get a few more opportunities this year.

Cam holds onto the ball because his WRs routes are so deep. When given short routes he has used them. Its not because Cam can't make short passes.
