Marty Hurney interview on WFNZ @ 8:45a

Johnny Rockets

Asked why Keek isn't in on passing downs when he was rated one of the better coverage LBs coming out of school. Asked why Beason is in there when its clear he's not 100%. Marty agreed and keeps saying the season is still young.

How much does JR have to do with personnel, is he really hands off? Marty says "I am 100% responsible for personnel. I talk to JR all the time"

Mac questioned why they seem to spend so much on RB's and such when the have other needs and why the Panthers appear to build their team differently than the rest of the league,

Marty basically said Mac's opinion on that matter sucked and he doesn't know what he is talking about. Said if he asked around the league people would say the Panthers do things no different.

Mac then took a shot at JR at the end of the interview by thanking Marty for taking accountabilty and coming on the show because JR doesn't take accountability for anything.

Short interview but good, tough questions.

I listened to it too. I think on balance, I still back Hurney. Yeah, there have been some missteps over the years, but on the whole I think there have been more good moves than bad. I also would rather have a hands off owner like JR than a control freak like Jerry Jones. I believe him when he says that losing eats at him as much or more than anybody else, and that he fully understands the fans' ire and the fingers pointed at him. And finally, I also agree with him that we have a ton of talent on this team. When the Panthers themselves realize it and put it to use, I still believe we're going to be delighted with the result. It's just that getting there is a painful journey.

As for JR's accountability, I think he does it the right way. He hired in the people he thinks best suited to run the team, and counts on them to do the job. If he butted in every time Marty or RR did something, then they would have zero authority with the media, the fans, or the team. Success comes of hiring the right people for the task, then letting them get it done.

Mac asked Hurney if he had a lifetime contract and if he was a puppet for JR. Marty said he doesn't even have a contract, but not sure if he meant that literally.

You know, that issue never was fully resolved (or at least disclosed) back in the summer of 2010 when Hurneys old contract ran out.

Hopefully after this year Hurney realizes that his idea is wrong a changes course. You can build a winning football team solely from drafted players in this NFL. We need to plug in some vet talent and bring a winning attitude to our team.
