High School football question regarding the band

For the first time, we went to a game where their band didn't play in the stands. They just stood there. Is this the norm everywhere else? They're the only school in our conference that doesn't play at least something in the stands. I don't know if they play for TD's. The only time our band is quiet is when we're on O or a TO. Between our band and the student section, our stadium rocks.

Even other bands that come to our stadium play. Well, except this school's band. They don't come. No wonder one of their parents assaulted our band director last year if they're used to complete quiet to play.

Strange, my daughters high school band played in the stands when the team was on defense and during breaks in the action. I went to most of the games during her 4 years and i still remember the set list lol

My daughters band director didn't grasp the concept that you had to stop playing before the play started. The refs warned them, and they did it again. The ref told them not to play anything until the second half, and if they did, they wouldn't play this game or the next. He told the band to keep playing. The ref told them to leave, so he made them stand outside and play. The ref told the principal that the band was banned for the rest of the season, and if they made any more noise, the football team would start forfeiting games. He was unemployed the next week.

Band directors labor under the delusion that football was invented so they could play ay halftime.

The refs have never said anything to our band about when to play or not to play, and this is our 5th year as band parents/boosters. Our principal demands our band travel to certain away games, even though our director would rather stay home. Hell, we bus our student section to most away games.

I can't speak for other directors regarding halftime, but ours views Friday nights as another practice show before competition on Saturdays. Your daughter must have had a shitty director. Our band practices all week, then football games, then they have to be at the school usually by 8 on Saturdays to leave for a competition. There's one competition where they are gone 14 hours.

Between our band, the student section with their own cheer director and those horn things, parents with air horns and cowbells, and the smoke from the grills that hangs low on the field, there's nothing like our stadium. Oh, and our visitor section is pretty much in the woods.

I felt like I was at a golf tournament last night. No cheering from their side, no band playing. They are the only school in our conference that is like that.

Let me guess, one was ESPN? lol We're on our 5th year as band parents. I hear that song in my sleep.

Up until this year, we knew all the cheers and dances, too. The cheerleaders had been doing the same routines since 03. New cheer coach this year, and she changed all the dances and cheers.

I know when I was in high school, the band wasn't allowed to play while during plays. Between plays and during timeouts/between quarters it was acceptable. They were pretty lenient though. If a band was finishing up while the ball was being snapped, they didn't care, as long as it ended before the next snap. If it didn't, they'd stop play and tell them to stop until a timeout/change of possession.

Yeah, that's how it is, but the director I was talking about was a dick who basically thought he could do what he wanted. Even when the refs warned him, he kept playing. About the time some of the parents got ready to take the kids out of the stands, the ref threw them out.

This is sunbunny's son. There's a school in our conference that had a parent walk up onto our director's podium while we were playing and threaten him. We had band parents AND students who were about to open a can of whoop-ass on him.Recently, we had an away game at that school and their band never played. They just stood there looking stupid. Football games are meant to be loud and exciting, otherwise, why would there even be an audience/crowd. In our conference, there are no set rules for when the band can play. In my opinion, if your school is wanting the band to stay quiet, why even have a band at the game. Plus, they're probably just mad because the football team sucks and they want them to at least attempt to win a game. I mean seriously, if the crowd can be as loud as they want to support their team, why can't the band be loud as well? Hypocrites.

I was in marching band for 4 years, so I think I know what I'm talking about when it comes to high school football games and marching bands.

    • This whole thing is sooooooooo dumb, why any of this is an ongoing news story is ridiculous. There are only 2 people who should actually care about this, his wife and her husband. Affairs happen, not that I'm saying it's okay to cheat, but at worst, the only "bad thing" that could be coming around from this affair is that information was passed between them, the same type of info that any coach and journalist who are friends may share with each other to help the other out. The Patriots shouldn't care as long as it doesn't affect his focus on the team.  And those saying that he's lost the locker room and their respect over the "lying" have to be fooling themselves.  Half the players in that locker room are more than likely actively or previously have cheated on their significant other.  So it's not like they're looking at him saying, "what a liar and terrible person, I can't trust him as my coach anymore"
    • Seriously?!?! First SNF game of the year and it's two teams that didn't make the playoffs last year? I thought they always made that Week 1 SNF game a banger with two great teams from the previous season. EDIT:  Just looked, last year was Bills-Ravens, previous season was Lions-Rams, Giants-Cowboys ironically before that (but both coming off the playoffs).  From what I can tell, this will be the first time since 2020 that SNF's week 1 game isn't 2 teams from the playoffs the year before, and the Cowboys were in that one too, against the Rams who also didn't make it the year before.
