David Shaw

I really hope he ends up being at the top of JR's list for potential coaches...here's why---->

2011 PAC12 Coach of the Year

2012 PAC12 Coach of the Year

NFL experience

Head Coaching experience

QB and WR coaching experience

Pro style offense at Stanford

Physical defense at Stanford

Played a roll in Luck's development

Coached under Harbaugh (who has a clue)

Making this type of hire (college ranks) could be a good risk for this organization. Time to think outside the box one time JR and take a chance because what you've done so far has only produced 4 winning seasons. Lets venture down the road less traveled...could be gold at the end of it

I completely agree with you. I think David Shaw would be a great fit for our team. Their is one problem, how do we get him to leave Stanford? I mean JR will have to pull a rabbit out his ass to get David Shaw from Stanford. As much as I would love for this to happen it just doesn't seem possible right now.

The same can be said about any coach at a successful college program. Boils down to whether he wants to be a head coach in the NFL.

i'd be fine with him or chip kelly, tbh.

i hate the "pro-style offense" tag being thrown around, tho. his offense might be more traditional, but what it means to be "pro-style is changing and in a couple years it won't be any more used in the pros than chip kelly's offense.

don't know that it matters, tho. he seems settled at stanford and isn't exactly chomping at the bit to leave there the way some other guys might.

JR will have to think out of the box for this one. Hopefully the new consultant and GM can convince him. JR has always liked NFL assistants coaches. Mainly defensive coaches

hasn't exactly worked out for him to go that route. how many winning seasons has this team had with defensive coaches in the existence of the team?

    • I know people get mad when I point this out but there are usually only 1-2 maybe 3 solid players each draft. Everyone likes to hype up in the offseason and think all 7 will be Pro Bowlers but realistically in my opinion: Freeling- Solid Starter for a while probably makes it to 2nd contract. Hunter- Turns out to be best player of the group. Turns into a Kawaan Short type DL. Brazzell- Serviceable, some flashes but doesn’t make it to a 2nd contract. Too slow in the short game, takes a while to build up speed, runs awkward on routes. Lee- I just don’t see it on tape. Maybe a taller version of Troy Pride.  Hecht- I think he will be around for a little while. Reminds me of Mays, where he was shaky at first but eventually became dependable. Wheatley- Really like him. Think this will be a guy that sticks around a while as a borderline starter/solid back up. He’s already probably better than Nick Scott. Kuwatch- Probably a depth/practice squad guy a few years and fizzles out.
    • And I believe the 1st matchup was Shough’s 2nd career start.   Remember Bryce’s 2nd start?    If you don’t, no sweat, he will probably replicate it a couple more times this year.
    • For a topic that started as a lighthearted, off-season "hey, bryce should keep the beard" banter, this thread sure took a turn
