The GM Candidates

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Don't expect the GM to be the only change at the front office level. I think there's a pretty good shot that we'll see some general restructuring as well. Accorsi was hired with the expectation that he'd make other suggestions also.

Could be a really interesting offseason.

Regarding Ron Rivera... (link)

After the game Rivera is more emotional than I have seen him. He loves what he does and he loves the man he works for and he loves the players who work for him. He doesn’t want to lose this not when, to him, it’s just getting good.

I ask what will happen.

”I will sit down with Mr. Richardson and we will evaluate the season,” says Rivera. “The process is going to begin when we get back to Charlotte. Like I said, Mr. Richardson has been fair and I appreciate the opportunity that he’s given me and we’ll see how things unfold.”

Whatever happens, Carolina has to entrust the football operation to a general manager. And how can the Panthers do that if they say: “We want you to run the team except we’re going to tell you who the coach is.”

If Richardson tells the general manager who will coach, what else will he tell him?

This is why I’ll be shocked if the Panthers make a move this week. Even if Beane is a candidate, there have to be others. If the candidate works for one of the 12 teams still playing meaningful football, Carolina can’t court him until his season ends. They can’t court candidates from teams that didn’t make the playoffs until Monday.

If Sorenson is correct on the rules...

Able to interview immediately:

Marc Ross

Dave Gettleman

Joey Clinkscales

Steve Keim

Would have to wait on...

Eric DeCosta

Tom Gamble

Scot McCloughan

George Kokinis

Of those four, the only two I'm all that interested in (DeCosta and Gamble) are likely long shots anyway.

Seriously doubt that happens.

Might wait on doing the McCloughan and Kokinis profiles. Wanna see a better indication that they might actually be candidates (mention of them was a long while back and may have been speculative; neither's been mentioned all that recently).

If another name comes up, I may just replace the placeholders I had for those guys with the new guy.

In his Monday presser, Ron Rivera indicated that the GM search has officially begun today,

They can't talk to Gamble or DeCosta yet, but Ross, Gettleman and Clinkscales are all available.

Jets and Jags have requested interviews with Gamble. Think those rules are only for coaches.

They've asked permission. Not sure when they can actually interview.

Over the past few years though, the NFL has allowed some interviews in off weeks, so it's possible.

Gamble's association with Bill Polian makes me question how realistic a possibility he is for us.

    • I have said if you out even an average QB into the offense we are averaging 25+ points a game. But that will never happen with Bryce under center.
    • The defense is 28 out of 32 in salary cap allocation for 2025. We have a ton of resources tied up in the offense including the highest paid OL in the league multiple 1st round WR's and multiple recent draft picks across the offense at TE and RB and we have two 1000 yard backs. Bryce and company couldn't get past Tyler Shough and his crew in 2 games. That's all there is to it. You can spin it and put the entire onus on the defense to your heart's desire it doesn't change the fact that this is an OFFENSIVE team now. If you want to argue that we should revert back to a defensive identity as we have been in the past which has brought us success then I will agree with you on that. But as it stands the onus is on the offense because that is where we have invested through the nose. Dave Canales and Bryce Young need to do a hell of a lot better than they have against the rebuilding Saints who without us should only have 2 wins this season.
    • Bryce is not trending up. He is the same QB he has always been. Bottom of the league in most categories.  If Canales thinks he can build a contender with Bryce then he is a bigger idiot then I thought.  Offense next year will have the same issues and be just as inconsistent as it was this year.  We have seen Bryce’a ceiling and it is 175 yards a game and that is not a QB you keep around as your starter. That is barely a backup.
