The Media and Black Quarterbacks

Is it just me or does it seem there can only be one of them under the spotlight at a time?

McNabb > Vick > VY > Vick > Cam > Cornball Bob > Wilson > Kaepernick etc etc

We all know the media despise Cam but even the media darling, Rg3 gets his fair share of criticism these days. Suddenly needs to become a pocket passer despite finishing the year with the 3rd highest QB rating in the League.

I wonder if Philip Rivers is getting crap for his past two years worth of INT's?

Or maybe Matt Ryan is getting slammed because his blood is not actually ICE like everybody claims.

Peyton Manning has lost his arm strength, and can't win playoff games in the cold.

Big Ben and his raping ways keeping that team down....

Good lord people, if you are the starting QB for an NFL team, black or white, you are going to catch hell.

They're right.

You may have a point to some of what you're saying. However, RG3 despite his QB rating, really wasn't a pocket passer. What they said was correct.

RG3 played in a quick throw/quick, one read offense, based 80% off of motion, trickery and play action, based off a great run game. If you ever noticed on most of his TD passes (or passes downfield, when he actually threw them) his receivers were wide open?? He rarely had to make Pro Throws or multiple reads sitting in the pocket in that offense. I'm not knocking him or his success for it. I'm just telling the truth.

Pretty much this. After brady lost two superbowls to the giants he was being talked about not being a winner and not being clutch, despite winning 3 superbowls and having countless clutch game winning drives in that span. The media and people in general have a super short term memory. Cam isn't in the playoffs right now and he is a year removed from being the greatest rookie the NFL has ever seen, nobody has any reason to talk about him.

I am beginning to think that the media criticism of Cam has less to do with him being black than it does with the media's desire to be right when they unfairly and incorrectly belittled him and his accomplishments leading up to the draft.

As far as that pre-draft criticism being racially biased, I think it certainly did play a part. But now, they want him to fail so they can feel smart. Several people lost a lot of credibility and they are trying to get it back.

If Luck wins OROY over Russell and RG3 it will be a travesty and it will further prove that point.

Understatement of the decade : )

Show me one college QB who had 13 Division 1 starts under his belt, and was selected no. 1 overall.

Those little criticisms as you call them were about being nervous about the selection. I was very nervous about it, and still think that Cam needs more time behind center to get better at the nuances of the game.

And the fact that Cam doesn't (and still won't) kiss the medias ass, doesn't help as well. That's actually behind some of the more negative, snarky media people seemingly always against him, like Peter King of SI.

However, I do agree (whether it's cause of race, not wanting to be wrong, Alabama, too much Swag Appeal, whatever), that many of the TV people that comment on Cam, appear to have no idea what type of QB he actually is, and more comment on their own perceptions of what they want/think him to be, or Pre-Draft stereotypes. .
