Colin Kaepernick Didn't Think He'd Beat Newton To Super Bowl, He Says At Media Day (USA Today)

Under the white hot spotlight and glare of Media Day--at the Super Bowl, Colin Kaepernick brings up our favorite Auburn Summer Student, and NFL player ("surrrrrprise Surrrprise") Cam Newton.

USA Today, reported how Colin Kaepernick never thought he would be at a Super Bowl before Cam Newton. Yes. the same Cam Newton, many Huddler's complain isn't mentioned much lately, popped up at media day.

Funny: Steve Smith on WFNZ today, said there was "a lot of Cam Newton talk today". So this is what he meant and was talking about, huh? Okay, what is he (Kaepernick) and USA today really trying to say though??

Boy, those 49er QB's love to talk about/reference one Cameron J. Newton, don't they? LOL. The article says:

"After discussing how he roomed at the NFL combines with Newton, Kaepernick remarked how he never thought he'd be in the Super bowl before the #1 pick".

Maybe it's cause his head coach considered playing him at safety, instead of QB at Nevada (another USA today article)? LOL. Nonetheless, I find this interesting and a complement to Cam (I hope), since Kaep appears like such a confident, cocky guy. Good for him (Kaep)! So as Charles Davis said on the radio the other day "It all falls back to Cam", when discussing the young QB's. I guess it is true then? LOL. Here's what Kaep's quote:

"At that point I was trying to do anything I could to have an NFL team look at me," Kaepernick said. "(Being better than him) wasn't even on my mind at that point."

Hmmmh. So does he think he's better than Cam now, or in a better situation?

This article continues with:

Kaepernick won't say it's gratifying to have bested Newton, but Kaepernick's mean streak is noted by his brother, Kyle, who remembers Colin exploding as a high school basketball player.

Double Hmmmh. OKay. "Bested Newton".

And USA today actually started the meat of the article (2nd paragraph) by, saying this:

Newton went on to win the rookie of the year award while Kaepernick rode the bench after San Francisco chose him with the 36th pick in the draft. In 2012, Newton leveled off with a lower completion percentage and fewer yards and touchdowns while the Panthers finished 7-9. Kaepernick supplanted Alex Smith in midseason as San Francisco's starting quarterback, leading the 49ers to a 7-2-1 finish leading up to Super Bowl XLVII vs. Baltimore.

Despite the team, Cam's and Chud's poor start: This is one of the reasons why Rivera pulling the air out the ball every time the Panthers had a lead during the second half of the season did Cam no favors (Raiders game, Cam had about 233 yds at the half, and ended with 270+ He could have had 400yds and broke 4000 again, for example). And there were others, even in the first half of the season. You take that argument/example away from lazy journalist, with a more aggressive head coach (especially when Cam was so close anyway) if he surpasses 4000 yards and 21 TD's again. Those are the little things, that an overwhelmed Rivera, probably doesn't even think about, that an experienced or more offensive/aggressive coach would have (mind you winning some games he lost).

We all know Cam's stats were very similar, and he played better at the end of 2012 than 2011 (and this wasn't a outright diss by USA today). No. And Cam's completion % was more a result of the offensive line. This is especially true, when you consider it was practically the same both halves of the season. So you can't say much about that.

Of course the article doesn't point any of this out, nor the fact Kaep plays in a more WCO (& better team), along with Alex Smith's success before him. Now, I have nothing against Kaep or USA today. He's a good player and I'm happy for him. No jealousy. Just pointing out the nuances of their reporting. I know they're bigging up Kaep, and should. Cause he's in the Super Baugh and Cam isn't. umm actually hes mixed...but i get what you are saying man.

and steve mcnair, mcnabb, young already proved a dual threat can make it to the superbowl....most time times they do make it far because they are harder to stop.

the problem is running qbs like joe web have been labeled dual threat and thats far from the truth because they only can run good.

"He'd never thought he would be in the Super Bowl before the number 1 pick."

Is Kaepernick retarded? The Number one pick usually goes to a team that is COMPLETELY rebuilding, that's why we were awarded the number one pick -- because we were/are terrible.

    • His physical attributes aren't going to change on a new team so I have no idea how he would pan out elsewhere but I can logically assume those issues he has had with processing which was supposed to be his key selling point before the draft would follow him. He was also supposed to be someone who thrives when the play breaks down but he has been inconsistent at best on that and at times horrific. I think where we each take a fork in the road on the determination of Bryce Young currently is you seem to still be treating him as a rookie and not a third year QB still repeating the same mistakes while showing that he has no arm talent to overcome even the slightest bit of adversity. I've said all along his rookie year and his sophomore season that I would be willing to overlook his interceptions if he was pushing the ball downfield consistently and even if he turned the ball over forcing a pass here and there to keep defenses honest I would accept it. But he has nothing. There is no deep passing game here. He threw the ball 55 times in Arizona which was 30 more times than Kyler Murray and only had a little over 100 more passing yards than him. Legitimately you should read that again and ponder it. That is embarrassingly atrocious. Circumstances here are not ideal with the WR's and OL but we cannot normalize this. It is horrendous. And we need to swallow our pride and begin scouting QB's for the 2026 draft. In the meantime this cannot continue on much longer for the sake of the locker room. And the upcoming schedule isn't going to get any better. If there is a silver lining to any of this we are going to find out just who Dave Canales really is throughout the rest of the season. He isn't getting a pass either.
    • I don't hate it but.....  eeeh it would take acquiring Kaprizov without giving up svech to make rod try Jarvis at 2C. Svechnikov/Aho/Kaprizov  Ehlers/Jarvis/Stankoven
    • Given the fact he declined buku bucks over on the HOF hockey board most don't think they will even get svech..... (not even canes fans) The $$$$ tag plus lack of leverage for Minny could end up seeing him dealt for somthing around what we got for Ranttanen....
