Curious Scenario for the Cap Guys

How viable is it for us to cut Jordan Gross and then sign say Sebastian Vollmer?

From what I've heard, we'd probably save about 6 mil if we could get Vollmer on a 5-6 mil a year contract.

If I'm in Gettleman's position, I'm tough on Gross. I give him an ultimatum. If he's such a leader, he shouldn't be making 11 million dollars with our cap situation. I think a 32 year old LT is more expendible than we make him out to be, former pro bowler or not. I think Gross more than deserves a spot on this team, but not for 11 mill, especially at his age.

You can't talk tough to Gross.....when all he has to do is point to our backfield. Gross plays everydown....if Gettlemen needs cap room all Gross has to do is point behind him. Gross has leverage. I'm not arguing that at all. I think you're right. But couldn't you say the same thing about Kalil? He certainly has leverage as well, BUT he took the high road and took (somewhat of) a pay cut.

Kalil didn't take a paycut or the high road. They just shuffled numbers.

Being a leader doesn't = taking a paycut. There are guys who have pocketed a lot of cash out there in recent times that haven't earned it much more so than Gross.

It is taking awhile b/c GM doesn't have much leverage....Gross does. They probably settle on a small restruture shuffling numbers.

Why pay two great Olinemen superstar money if the unit as a whole is collectively one of the worst in the NFL? I love Gross and he's been a great player for us, but his salary is handicapping our ability to protect Cam - far outweighing his personal ability as 1/5 of our line. I hate to bring this up as well, but what is our plan if he goes down with an injury?

Yeah, Gross is a pooty head for not volunteering to give away his salary at the end of his career for the good of a team that has, IMO, an average, at best, projection for the next several years.

How is it a Cam investment? Even with Gross all year long most analysts pegged us at around 27-29th in Oline rankings. Even if we cut Gross and didn't replace ANY pieces on the oline we can only drop a few spots when we sport the official worst line in the NFL.

If we are going to spend about 25 mil a year on our Oline then we should be getting results. Gross could be the best LT in the league and I still wouldn't pay him if it meant fielding a poo line.

cap space....much needed cap space. unless he restructures, tho, they'll probably wait until next year when they save $8mil instead of $6mil this year. this year would leave an additional $5mil in derad space as opposed to $2mil next year.

deangelo is in the same situation (we'd save $2.8mil by cutting him next year). same with beason....well, beason's dead money would still be a lot, but it goes down by quite a bit every year and next year we'd save $2.75mil by cutting him.

It is a Cam investment b/c he work magic if he sees it coming....Gross matters b/c Cam can't see it.
