Today Steve Smith was on the local sports show in Charlotte and did a position by position break down of the team.

This is just Smitty opinion of the position that are filled and locked down and the ones that might be up for grabs.

1. QB - Cam is a Lock not much debate on the radio.

2. RB - Lock D-Will and Stew. Steve thinks Stew will be the starter and get most of the carries.

3. FB - Tolbert -Lock - Steve made a Joke about Brockles being bow leeged.

4. WR. Steve- Lafell - Locks - There was a debate between the 2 Drive host and Steve about Lafell. With Steve defending Lafell and pretty much thinking he is a lock for number 2.

5. TE- Olsen - a lock Hartsog a blocker - Steve thinks Rosario might make some noise keep a eye on him.

6. Oline - Gross, Amini, Kaili - Locks - the right side could be up for grabs. Didn't know if it will be a draft pick.

I'll do the defense a little later.

Where/when is the football portion of this? I went to the link and didn't hear them talk about Panthers football at all.

The Drive hour 3. At 2.30 they started talking about the positions break down. The link should be right on hour 3.

Edit : The link has hour 4 at the top go down and click on hour 3 and it will go to the top of the page where you can play it.

Steve referred to Jordan Senn as "The Senn Master". That's great.

Said Colin Cole was in Charlotte training and recovering from a broken ankle this off-season. Cole didn't even have an agent and called up the Panthers and got himself a work out and Steve said he just killed it at the workout and they signed him right there. Says he is a quiet guy that just goes about his business but will surprise some people this season.

89 said that Florence will start at one of CB positions while the rest battle it out for the other. Sounded pretty confident in that assertion.

High praise for Senn, Blackburn, Hogue, and Colin Jones in the special teams department. Referred to them all as "special team aces."

    • I'm one of the ones that won't let it go because it didn't solve the problem. We didn't address the center position which was a huge mistake. We were in position to easily take 2 or the top IOL. Instead of drafting JPJ over XL or Frazier over Brooks, we relied on an oft injured guard to center conversion and lo and behold, it failed as predicted. XL looks like a 1 year college wonder and an injured Brooks hasn't even surpassed Eric Shelton.  Bryce was also benched for poor performance, so the issue that many claimed was solely bad oline play wasn't. It didn't fix him bailing out of tight pockets because of being unable to see the field or him refusing to work on his atrocious footwork. Then there's the $$$. Lewis got a good guard payday. Hunt got a tackle payday. Pay tackles, draft guards, if you can.  I have no issues addressing problems through FA. It was not addressing C at all that's been the issue and still has been. Ryan Kalil was the anchor of our offensive line. We had years of solid center play and it showed. Now we're still piecemealing the center position with an expensive oline and it's still a shitshow. Why? Because the player responsible for what happens on the line presnap has little to no experience doing it. Spending on a center, whether it be through draft or FA is not bad. It's not a position that can have anyone just thrown in with no drop off in performance. A great center lifts the play of the guards on each side.  I don't like how we've built the line because we've ignored the hinge pin that everyone counts on every play. And the reality of the situation is, it didn't solve the actual problems with Bryce because those have nothing to do with the oline.
    • Haha!!! That's true. Also carry Tomahawks, ballistic missiles, fighter jets, VSTOL aircraft, etc., but none of them clog up the crappers.
