NASCAR came down hard Wednesday on the Joe Gibbs Racing team of Matt Kenseth after the engine in the winning No. 20 car from Sunday's Sprint Cup race at Kansas Speedway failed inspection.

Kenseth was penalized 50 points in the standings and his crew chief, Jason Ratcliff, was suspended for six races -- as well as the May 18 All-Star race -- and fined $200,000 after the engine failed a secondary postrace inspection.

And in a rare move, car owner Joe Gibbs had his owner's license suspended for the next six races and he won't earn car owner points during that time. He also was docked 50 car owner points. Toyota, which supplies the JGR engines through Costa Mesa, Calif.-based TRD, also lost five points in the manufacturer standings.

Damn. Can't remember the last time that happened.

"One part came in 2.7 grams underweight, and somehow made it through our processes and ended up unfortunately in an engine that was selected to be weighed," White told ESPN.com.

He said the magnetic steel part, which connects the piston and crankshaft, had a required minimum of 525 grams.

White added the illegal part was underweight by the equivalent of "two cotton balls.''

NASCAR's no tolerance policies are a bit draconian

I don't remember them EVER coming down that hard on ANYONE. It doesn't matter about points though because I guarantee that Matt will get into the chase on wins. It's weird since you'd really think that taking a win away would be the most logical thing to do in this situation. Taking away Kenseth's win and giving him the points for finishing in last would seem a lot more fitting.

I was talking about the owner having his license suspended.

Got it. That was just the worse penalty could remember recently

Hopefully Gibbs gets his head out of his ass and stops trusting TuRD to send raceworthy engines. First there was the reliability issues, now this. Build your own coach, or switch to Ford lol

Well now...

Crew chief Jason Ratcliff had his suspension cut to one race, and the driver and car owner point fines were reduced from 50 to 12 each. A $200,000 fine against Ratcliff remains intact, and he will be on probation for the next three events. All other penalties against Ratcliff, JGR and Kenseth were completely rescinded. Kenseth now moves from 11th to fourth in Sprint Cup points.

A five-point penalty levied against Toyota was increased to seven points as part of the appeal decision. That could affect the annual manufacturers’ championship.

    • I don’t know about floor in a team defense sense but we needed more.  The floor that I am familiar with is our QBs floor and it is so low that every other part of the team needs to be beefed up.     We tried our best to improve these things and I think we did improve the defense and we at least kept the offense  from sinking from no LT.  And ostensibly helped the receivers too.   So we kept a window open that we at least have a chance to improve our record by a game of two.  Which would probably give us the division.

    • Yeah. I am one of. those who think a JAG RB can eat with really good blocking. (Brooks is most important in my mind, in tbe passing game and that is what we’ll lose without him)  There are a lot of aspects to this. The big one that caused us to struggle is Young and his arm scared no one.  Best back, best blocking still cannot defeat a really good defense if they are not forced to respect the pass.  And teams did not.    But, a strong OL and running game Can get us over against weaker defenses.  And if Bryce still doesn’t scare anyone we can still win some games. Like last year  So it is really important to tend to that OL.   Get that straight and see if in his fourth year he can finally back defenses off. That is what if is all about this year to me, on the Bryce front.
