Yeah but what logic block are you having that is preventing you from thinking they wont both make the team. Cause theyre both returners? That rational is a little thin I think, Hubs.

Well, let's see if I can clear my convoluted logic up for you.

 

Adams is a WR/Returner. If he doesn't make it as a Returner, he has very little shot of making the team as a WR.

 

Barner is a RB/Returner. If he doesn't make It as a Returner, he has a shot at making the team as a RB.

 

So, unless Adams has fixed his butterfingers, and can actually prove he can handle return duties. He is a long shot to make the team.

 

Whereas, Barner could make the team as a RB, and if he can handle the return duties, he is pretty much a lock to make the team.

 

The only way they both make the team is if they both show the ability to be a factor in the return game. And if they are both factors, we should probably keep the one that can help in other ways. Barner has a chance to see the field as a Scat Back type RB. Where Adams has little chance of making the team as a WR.

 

tl/dr version. The only way they both make the team is if Adams makes it as the Return Guy.

To tell you the truth, I don't even think of him in that way. So let's take a looksee at what we have.

 

Smitty, Lafell, Hixon, Ginn, and that's 4. We have now got 10 other guys fighting for those last 2 spots. Given his checkered past with the dropsies, size, and lack of speed, he is 1 drop form being in the first cut.

 

But, my biggest concern with Joe, is he just hasn't shown anything close to a flash. As I have said, If he makes the team it will probably be as a returner. And then he takes up another WR spot. Which leaves only 1 spot remaining.

 

IMO that is to much cost for the perceived value. So he had better show out all offseason. Every meeting, every practice, and at every opportunity. He has to show his past is truly behind him.

 

The kid is behind the eight ball. He has a shot. It is up to him to seize it. I will say, if, if he makes the team, I am going to be happy. I always liked the kid.

First of all, he's not slow, when you say something like that it makes me want to not hear anything else you have to say because its just plain absurd. Go watch any time he's touched the ball and tell me you dont notice that he's exploding away from the initial defenders. Secondly its not dropsies that he has, he fumbles. Thats worse, but both are fixable anyways. Thirdly Tavon Austin. . you know that guy that was drafted in the top 10, is 170-175. . .smaller than Adams. There are plenty of sets to put small shifty guys into. Aaaaand lastly a player needs to really poo the bed to get cut after being drafted in the 4th the year before.

 

Like I said he has to show something, but hes a favorite to make that 5th spot. Oh and btw its not like kick/punt returning is a safe and cozy position to play. Injuries are common enough that coaches/gm's often stock plenty of them.

 

The bottom line is that he will be helpful to the team so he will get a spot. Im not trying to poke, I hope you understand Im just a loud guy who likes to have fun and laugh a lot. . . but you gotta get them paddles back in the water sir. It sounds like you have an emotional tie to some other candidate on the roster and Im still waiting for you to spill that part. Who is it, Lamont, that big dummeh?  Whos better than Joe Adams?. . .  Pilares, AE? and dont say Gettis, pssst I know, but he needs confidence.

With the additions of Ginn, Hixon and now Barner, the last two WR spots will have to make the squad based upon their receiving skills. If a guy can't play WR he won't make the team.

 

man dont speak in absolutes you sound like Rayzor. Lots of coaches put 5th guys on the squad for being good gunners. Unfortunately, we dont know jack until training camp comes.

It just makes the most sense. The return game is covered. If you're keeping a WR just to be a gunner somethings wrong. That's how foxy used his 5th WR...LOL. Plus i think we got the gunner spot covered. Its not a bad thing IMO. It puts the most skilled guys on the team.

and Im not saying we would do that, Im just saying it has been done before, like. . a lot more commonly than youre making it to be.

 

We have no idea who, out of the new guys, have ability in our system yet so I would say its hard to pencil in anyone's duties.

First off. 4th rounders are not a lock to make a team. Especially after the season Adams just had. If he does not fix the issue he has with ball control, it wouldn't matter what round he was drafted. He hurts his chances to make this team every time he drops something. If Rivera can't trust him, he won't see the field. If he can't sniff the field, what good is he?

 

Secondly, his measurables. He is one of, if not the, smallest guys around. He may have some quickness, but he ain't fast. He has potential, I will give him that.  But even you said he needs to show something.

 

I live in SEC country. I have seen him play. I am a big fan. Unfortunately, I have to believe he did everything within his power improve for this year. That if, if, he can reach his potential this year. He can help us.

 

There definitely is an opening for Joe. Is he capable of claiming it?

 

Hellz, I am already on the Adams in the Slot, with Barner in the Backfield train. I just don't see it becoming a reality.

      Sometimes you get very valuable information from fantasy football sites. I found an analysis that you may want to read from The Fantasy Footballers. Perhaps you'll gain an insight as to why we moved up and got him. As always, here are a few snippets: "As expected, he dominated in the 2023 season. He averaged an impressive 2.03 Scrimmage Yards per Team Play, which ranks in the 86th percentile among all junior seasons since 2013." "Naturally, after initially playing behind two NFL-caliber running backs, Brooks’ career numbers do not jump off the page. However, his 2023 campaign gave us a glimpse of just how massive his upside could be at the next level. In fact, Brooks is one of only TWO running backs in this class to exceed 2.00 Scrimmage Yards per Team Play within their first three seasons in college."  "If you watch Jonathon Brooks’ film, you will find multiple plays in which he created yardage with his quick feet and lateral agility. He is elusive in open spaces and has an impressive ability to stack multiple cuts to avoid contact. Combined with his impressive burst and acceleration, Brooks can be a matchup nightmare in the second and third levels of the defense." "While Brooks is not the most physical running back, he does have a knack for absorbing contact and bouncing off defenders. You see this time and time again in his film." He's not JAG. Someone had to make the move and take him, and we were the ones to do it. He's elusive, has good speed and acceleration, exceptional contact balance, and is an outstanding blocker. Just like any nice RB transitioning to the league, he will need to get used to taking what the defense gives him, while also showing discriminating patience, but he has demonstrated some ability on that front in college. Brooks' only real knock is the ACL. But ACLs aren't career ending anymore, or even skill ending as evidenced by Dalvin Cook, Todd Gurley and others. We'll just need to temper our expectations during his rookie campaign while he gets back to form. Once he does, we'll finally have the talented three-down back that has eluded us since Stew retired.

      I mean, first of all, I'm not the one who initially said he was a life long fan, it was in that tweet in the OP. But more importantly, "life long fan" is a relative term, especially for a franchise like the Panthers.  I think anyone who was say, 10-12 or younger when the franchise started, and been a fan since the start, could claim to be a life long fan. I'm 38, been a fan of the team since year 1 even though I'm not even from the Carolinas, after almost 30 years of fandom and following them since the beginning, I have no issue saying I'm a life long Panthers fan. Very possible his dad is say around 40 years old and been a Panthers fan since the start.  And even if he's a little older, if you're a fan of a team for 30 out of your say 45ish years of life... that's "life long" in that instance.
