I think the approach by Sony is really interesting, they are getting a ton of MMO's on board as launch titles, so you can buy the system and have around 4-5 different MMO games on day 1.

Those that have been confirmed so far and all of them are Free to Play.

DC universe - Available this year

PlanetSide 2 - Available this year

WarFrame - Launch title

Blacklight: Retribution - N/A

I'm sure that there will be more announced at E3.

Full game list.

Also word that Respawn's (Most of the old infinity ward studio) game is only going to be available on xbox 360 (downgraded port by another studio) PC and Xboxone.

MS confirms the 24 hour connection rumor that Harrison mentioned.

Networking Requirements

  • While a persistent connection is not required, Xbox One is designed to verify if system, application or game updates are needed and to see if you have acquired new games, or resold, traded in, or given your game to a friend. Games that are designed to take advantage of the cloud may require a connection.

With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library. Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection, but you can still watch live TV and enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies.

I'll let the smoke clear before I make a decision on either one...if I make a decision on either one.

Same here.  This will be the first time I haven't gotten a console on release day, in a loooong time.  I want to stick with Xbox, but I don't really need everything they are trying to sell with this one.  I may end up getting it anyway, as long as the games are good and there is sufficient support from third party developers.

Got official news on the used game front from MS. Major bombshell here. http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/06/06/microsoft-details-xbox-one-used-games-always-online

Used Games and Giving Games to Friends

Microsoft also spelled out its policies on game lending, trade-ins and rentals. "In our role as a game publisher, Microsoft Studios will enable you to give your games to friends or trade in your Xbox One games at participating retailers. Third party publishers may opt in or out of supporting game resale and may set up business terms or transfer fees with retailers. Microsoft does not receive any compensation as part of this. In addition, third party publishers can enable you to give games to friends."

“We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers. Microsoft does not charge a platform fee to retailers, publishers, or consumers for enabling transfer of these games.”

Microsoft says "your friends and family, your guests and acquaintances get unlimited access to all of your games. Anyone can play your games on your console--regardless of whether you are logged in or their relationship to you." The company added that “Xbox One is designed so game publishers can enable you to give your disc-based games to your friends. There are no fees charged as part of these transfers.

There are two requirements: you can only give them to people who have been on your friends list for at least 30 days and each game can only be given once.”

It's worth noting that Microsoft allows you to gift games to friends but they can't borrow them. Microsoft added that "loaning or renting games won’t be available at launch, but we are exploring the possibilities with our partners."

However, anyone can play games using your console. "Your friends and family, your guests and acquaintances get unlimited access to all of your games," Microsoft says. "Anyone can play your games on your console--regardless of whether you are logged in or their relationship to you."

Xbox One will also allow you to give up to 10 family members access to "log in and play from your shared games library on any Xbox One." Similar to Xbox 360, "a family member can play your copy of Forza Motorsport at a friend’s house. Only now, they will see not just Forza, but all of your shared games. You can always play your games, and any one of your family members can be playing from your shared library at a given time."

SO it allows family members on family accounts to play the games downloaded to the main account from any Xbox one. The used game issue was correct and there may be additional fees that's based on the third party developer. Publisher's determine if you can trade in a game at all or if it's yours forever.

No renting or loaning of games at launch, but you can give your game away to a friend (You won't have access to it anymore) but they can't resell it, trade it in or give that game back to you. It's there's forever and ever.  If your playing the game on another system that you own or a friends, the system has to connect every hour. Needs over 2gbps speed for optimal service for online features.

Developer reaction to the news released by MS today,

Even if the PS4 has the same kind of policy on used games they still have that "Ace in the Hole" if you will of being able to say during their conference "well we don't require you to log in every 24 hours to our server so if you're without internet for longer than a day you can still game".  If Microsoft doesn't come hard with great games on Monday they will be the laughing stock of e3, and as a guy who buys all three consoles every cycle for the exclusives that sucks.  I already have my WiiU, and I've already made my mind up I'll be getting the PS4 before the One, but I will eventually have both as I love Fable/Forza and am extremely interested to hear what the new Rare game is on Monday (a proper Banjo Kazooie pease!)....

I've been catching up on the news, and it's interesting.  While not as flexible as a purely disc based system which we've lived in, it's a lot more flexible than steam/itunes/google play.

Again, I want to see all of the details together in action (i.e. demos/hands on/ect).  I do not thing MS is going to touch this stuff at their E3 presentation on Monday.  Instead, they are going to focus on games and only games.  A writer for Kotaku (or a commentor) mentioned that gamers have short memories when confronted with shinies.  I kind of agree.  There is a lot of venom about "I want to take my stuff and do what I want with it!"  But at the end of the day, millions will buy the XboxOne and PS4, will live with the DRM restrictions.  Soon we will all be in awe of the flexiblity we have with these super-duper awesome games with their kind DRM!

Personally, I've really cooled off A LOT on the next generation of game systems.  On one hand, there's a lot of cool technology there.  On the other hand, there are so many issues popping up.  Sony has been very quiet aside from a few tweets and statements.  Nothing ground shaking.  What does that tell you?  Nothing, which would seem like a poor idea when your main opposition is pouring gasoline on itself and giving away lighters.  Sony should be pointing out that they aren't Microsoft, and that they are more gamer friendly.  You don't get the sense they are telling everything.

Thankfully, I'm not of enough means to buy a bunch of consoles, and my time is spent in other areas.  It will be good to let the systems beat on each other, patch and change, and finally get to a point where I might want to invest my money in them.

I guarantee you they will mention the fact that you don't have to be online every 24 hours during their e3 press conference.  If they have a more flexible policy for used games you can bet that will be mentioned too.  Why tweet something out or give information to a news organization if you can just wait till a worldwide event on Monday.  The only reason Microsoft is letting all these details loose is because they knew they would be received with venom, and didn't want the lasting image from their conference being the DRM issues and having to essentially always be online.  Sony has already said they're not adopting the always online mentality, so if their used game stance allows for more freedom for consumers why wouldn't they take shots at M$ right after their e3 presser....

If it's a proper Banjo Kazooie game, I'll be getting a xbox one when that particular game comes out. I could care less about Call of Duty or respawn's new game. I'd get Banjo, Forza and Fable for it and thats about it. Still don't like the no loaning or borrowing games, the kinect always being plugged in or the every 24 hour check.  Giving developers the key to allowing trades is nice for the developers as it does give them kickback on used games.

The big issue here is that it isn't a MS system like most originally thought, it's a per developer system and each developer can control which retailer you can trade in at and for what price you'll get on the trade in.

Since it's a developer system that kind of pushes Sony into a corner, if they don't go with the flow They might have less developers making games for them or exclusives from third party. If they go with the flow it pisses off the gamer's.

I think the best system is to not allow trade in's for the first 60 - 90 days after release, then unlock the trade in for those titles. Allow the developers to get a kick back from used game sells at that point. The reason I go for this is that most new game sales happen in the first 60-90 days for a new title, that's when the majority of the money is made.

With that said, Sony has pretty much already said they weren't doing most of this.

With Sony not having internet connection requirements, they can't do any type of DRM with the games themselves like tying the game to your online account. Which means that the games aren't locked to an account which would allow free trading of games.

I still don't understand how ANYONE can defend Xbox One. I personally don't like being raped by corporations and an industry that is making more money with the current system than they ever have. Hopefully eventually there's going to be books written about how greed killed the Xbox.
