Is there anything more unsanitary that a public restroom key

Fuggin 7-Eleven in Elmhurst, IL. Trying to take a piss before a sales call. Door is locked. So the dude behind the counter hands be a sawed off 2x4 that is so dirty and black it looks burnt. Attached to the end of this disease ridden piece of wood is a key. I was like an acrobat trying to get out of the restroom without touching anything including the piss and poo stained key holder.

in peru the public toilets don't have lids. you just spread your cheeks and sit on the rim and hope nobody splashed anything on it. also there are no doors

I'd take my chances with that over that damn wood-key contraption. I am considering amputating my right hand.

Karachi, Pakistan in the mid-late 70's...

...where everyone and every animal used the same facilities- commonly referred to in this country as a "road." Except all the roads were crowned and the waste simply collected on either side of the road in small ditches.

Yokosuka, Japan into the late 80's...

... where any "restroom" in a bar was gender non-specific and the commode was really nothing more than a glorified trough you simply squatted over, not unlike what Philly mentioned.

Old US Navy ships built in the late 40's, some of which were still in commission into the 70's post- Viet Nam, had commodes that were a row of seats sitting atop a trough through which salt water ran from one end of the trough to the far end and overboard. The most coveted seat was the one furthest upstream and one of the common practices was to wad up a handful of toilet paper, light it and send it floating downstream under the row of butts occupying the head.
