Fowler on Shula

schemes? chemistry? coaching? there are a lot of variables

Yea, they all play a role but I think the point is that good coaches and systems can get more out of poor talent than good talent can get out of poor coaches and systems.  The examples of good coaches/systems getting more out of less are many:

SF has a great TE and a good RB and a great OL.  Their offensive production is all Harbaugh.  NO has a great QB, a solid WR in Colston, a great TE and JAGs everywhere else.  NE has a great QB, a great TE and a bunch of JAGs.  All those teams get MUCH more out of their offense than the sum of their parts.

Then you have Atlanta with a good QB, great TE, very good RB, two borderline great WRs.  They should have had record breaking offensive numbers instead of just good numbers.  Last year Carolina's offensive production was well below the talent on the team.  The Lions should probably do better offensively than they do.  The Titans have CJ2K, had Jared Cook, and a bunch of good young WRs.  When they had Hasselbeck they had a solid vet, and now with Locker we'll see, but their offense has been underperforming.  These teams have been less than the sum of their parts.

I think history says coaching and system are more important than perceived talent level.  I just hope Shula fixes the glaring problems in the system Chud implemented, keeps the stuff that works, and doesn't fug it up on gamedays.

    • No one way to do it, it does appear that with the bigger draft picks of the last 5 years…..majority haven’t steered clear of young QBs on the roster being their hopeful guy. Especially past their rookie seasons but even some the biggest ones have had it early.   As far as Andy Dalton, the two young guys he has “mentored”…..have had very rough NFL starts.  Which really ask the why the heck is Dalton here.   He doesn’t really check any box.  No young potential.  Can’t step in and win.  And his mentor track record with Fields and now Bryce is bad
    • I had thought the Panthers might let him play out his contract this year and hope he stays healthy. If not draft a left tackle and move Ekwonu to right tackle.
    • Frankly, if most teams in the NFL lose their starting QB for a significant amount of time, they're screwed. The fantasy is that one has a future Tony Romo or a Nick Foles that can carry a stacked team. The reality is that you might get roughly 3~5 games out of your backup before it all falls apart. Remember all of Peyton Manning's backups? Utterly terrible. Speaking of backup QB's, Raiders may need one. https://www.nfl.com/news/raiders-qb-aidan-o-connell-suffered-fractured-wrist-in-preseason-finale-expected-to-be-out-6-8-weeks
