Miami puts pretty much every other city in this nation to poo

I'm happy that you got out and had a good time- there aren't a lot of people who travel their own country anymore, and there's a lot to be seen.

I've had the good fortune of traveling most of the country and, quite honestly, Miami doesn't even make my top 10 favorite cities in the States.

sweet, sounds like you had a good time. i've never been to a hostel in the US before so i'm interested in hearing your impressions.

i lived in melbourne briefly when i was a kid and have good memories of it, but except for a quick overnight stay in miami en route to panama (the country) i haven't been back to do any kind of exploring. i'm hoping to take a couple days off of work this december and roadtrip down to fort myers/sannibel island area, i'm told it's pretty awesome.

The hostel was much better than staying in an ordinary hotel. Not nearly as nice, but it was the people that made it awesome. Pretty much every nationality represented there (except for the British mostly) was super down to earth and friendly. It felt good in a way to hear European, South American, and Australian impressions of America and it made me realize that there is much much more to this world than the USA.

Just talking to the people has made me want to study abroad in the near future.

I could see why some people don't like it there. It's a lot like LA in some parts, and in others (I.e. Little Haiti or Hialeah) it's a poohole. I enjoyed South Beach though.

Part of what made the trip so memorable was the journey there on Amtrak. If you really want to see the country then there is no better way to do so than by train.

yup, that's the beauty of hostels. i'm telling you man, make a way to travel somewhere and backpack around hostels in a foreign country. there's really nothing like it, the american experience is magnified by the fact that you're exploring a different country and you, as an american, are the exception rather than the rule.
