Cam Newton contract extension?

Happy Panther

This is a new era where college qbs have shown the ability to come in and play well immediately. Newton lost the rookie yardage record last year and he will lose the two year record this year. His NFL passer rating has been mediocre both seasons. 20 qbs threw more TDs than Newton last year and 25 qbs completed a higher percentage of their passes. Throw in the leadership and maturity issues and you have a player few GMs will be willing to take a big risk on unless he starts. Playing much better football. He looked terrible yesterday. Terrible.

Cam would be so awesome in an offense that features him.

you know, giving him a few weapons, a sturdy O-line, and perhaps utilizing his very unique strengths.

Look for Gettleman to make this happen. Couldn't achieve it in one year with Hurney's mistakes still very much present. *Rivera*

most QB's would, it's those special guys that do more with less.  most of this board obviously doesn't think Newton is a guy that can do that.

I knew I had seen this guy before. I remember him from last year. He's been posting this same drivel since last season. Looking through his posts, all he's ever done is post about how bad Cam is. Totally no agenda, right Tony?

A running QB in college does not necessarily transfer well to the pro game.  Defenders are much faster and much bigger and hit way harder.  You cannot put Cam in an Auburn style offense and have him survive half the season.  That is why he will have to learn to be a passer or move on.

His running skills should only be used to escape a sack or get an occasional first down.  RGIII, Vick and others have not held up well when slammed around by the NFL defenses.  Thus the efforts of having him read defenses and learn to pass.  And by the way, I don't think he is quick enough to run Chip Kellys offense.  Vick is doing a good job at it however.

Posters like him are popping back up now that the team is struggling. They didn't want him drafted, and disappeared during the 2011 season. They come back every now and again when Cam doesn't play absolutely perfect.

No poo. I half expect TRD to make an appearance

Historically it has been assumed that we sign Cam to a lucrative extension as soon as the bargaining agreement allows it. I believe this would be at the end of this season, so around February?

With Gettleman here and Rivera potentially gone things could be a little different. I assume we would still keep sign a new contract, it just wouldn't be as big as we all thought unless he rebounds this year. I can't imagine we want him testing free agency no matter how he does. I can't recall the last time a franchise QB wasn't locked up ASAP.

Or do we let him ride out his contract before doing anything?

Rebound from what? Throwing a couple of long/short balls just like Brady, Peyton, Rogers and every other QB who start a game?

Rebound from what? Having a stat that was very much inline with the other young QBs whose team won yesterday? BTW, do you know the Russel Wilson stats in last night's game was 122 yds. 1 TD, and 1 Int, yet his team won 29 to 3. Can u imagine that? Oh yes, and Colin threw three Ints and couldn't get a damn thing going last night. I wonder if the 49er fans are ready to get rid of him seeing that he took Alex's position.

My impression of this site besides the sheer entertaining side of it is, some of do seriously believe Cam is responsible for every team lost. U seem to give off the vibe that this team's success is predicated on him being "perfect" at every level and not so much on what the other players do.If Cam does his job, everything else will fall in place, seems to be the twisted mindset of some.  In the real world, Cam is very much on par with many of the other QBs including the elite ones, who over/under throw and  make mental mistakes. The only thing is, they have players around them who take their jobs seriously and go out every Sunday and work hard for their QB and the team. FYI, Cam doesn't work for the Offense. They work for him. Don't believe me, watch how those in the media behave when their "preferred QB" isn't getting the help he needs from his receivers and team in general.

Name a "special guys" who haven't been playing on the pro level say for like ten years that maybe able to do what you're speaking of? There isn't one QB that is asked to do what Cam is doing where fans, like some of you, expect so much out of him while excepting so little from the rest of the team. Those QBs don't last in the NFL because the team burn them out and fans like you seem to think it's okay.

I guess his skin color must be messing with some of you because you seem to see him as some sort of workhorse. Wrong! In the real world of QBing, it's the surrounding cast of players who STEP UP to help the QB, remember? Not the QBs killing themselves to do it all.

    • In my view, the realistic expectation for this team to compete will start 2027.  At that time, I think we could be looking at the following (this is HIGHLY speculative):   QB:  You know, Bryce.  I am not a fan, but they don't ask me.  But there is reason for hope--and here it is.  Bryce will be entering his prime.  Since we are likely to pay him, there will be changes that I include throughout this exercise--I realistically speculate on what they are going to do with Bryce and then I realistically speculate on what means in terms of the cap and other positions. Bryce HAS IMPROVED.  The idea is that if you give him more weapons and protection, that will continue.  His career:   At this rate, if his growth continues, by 2027 we should expect nearly 30 TDs and about 12 Interceptions and a Rating of about 98.  His completion percentage should settle at 65-66% or so.  If that happens, you can win with it. The following stats demonstrate how the Panthers will be able to afford it (and re-sign Ickey) My guess is they will require about $60m per year. This is why rookies who can play are important.  It also helps us see the blueprint.  You may disagree, but this is the cruel realities of the salary cap. Robert Hunt:  Cut post June 1 and save $19m.  Who do you replace him with?  Ickey. Tershawn Wharton:  Cutting him saves nearly $15m.  We should all hope to see Aaron Hall (UDFA) make the roster and play well.  Regardless, this is a position we would likely have to address in the next draft. Trevin Moehrig:  Cutting Moehrig as the starting SS saves this team $16.5m.   Ransom will be on year 3 of a cheap rookie deal and should be more than ready to take the reins.  their styles are similar.  Furthermore, FS Wheatley (R, 4th round) will be starting. Taylor Moton:  So much depends on his knee, but I have an idea that he can play another 3 years.  extending him could save the team about $5m per year.  Cutting him outright would save the team about $21m. In the most drastic situation, we have to cut Moton and the other three players mentioned.   We would need (in all likelihood) a starting DT and RT.  It is possible that the DE would be addressed, but Wharton's production (so far) could be equaled by a rookie.  Look for a cut free agent and a 2027 draft pick here.  If you cut Moton, you save $21m, and that would be the only big hole to fill.  Having Ickey at RG gives you some depth at T, and Ickey could be the guy.  T could be pick in the 2027 draft (first round), fwiw.  It saves you $21m while costing you $5m, for example. We get younger, creating a core of Freeling, Hecht, and the RT first rounder in 2027) along with Ekownu (second contract in the $15m range, and Lewis, whose contract would be in the $16m range if not extended.)  The OL cuts (Hunt, Moton) would save $40m.  The OL would get younger and still solid with veterans at G.   By cutting Wharton (no brainer if his play stays the same) and Moehrig (good player--but we have Ransom on a rookie contract who would not be that much of a drop off--if any) in addition to Hunt and Moton, we would save over $70m in cap room. We would be able to give Bryce bag  and we would have enough to re-sign Ickey (if the knee is not too risky) to a Guard contract (probably at a discount, coming off that injury).  Furthermore, we could add a RT in the draft (or a RG if Ickey moves to RT) and that would be the only large hole to fill. Correct my logic if you see issues-- On defense, in addition to the aforementioned, Scott ($2m contract) is out, replaced by a 4th round rookie contract. CB Jackson's contract ($7.8m) expires and he is (possibly) replaced by a rookie contract.  At Edge, patrick Jones II's $10m contract expires and he is likely a reserve, and his role is absorbed by Phillips, Scourton, Princely, and possible an UDFA like Isaiah Smith or a 2027 draft pick.   These productive developmental players over the past 2 drafts will pay huge dividends.  On paper, I see the team getting much younger and possibly better while cutting nearly $100m and reallocating that money to get more production.
    • If everything played out and that last thing happened, I probably just quit.
