It just makes too much sense. WR is probably the biggest need on this team. I dont believe that we'll be in a position to draft a Marqise Lee or Sammy Watkins (Top10) or at least I'm hoping so. I would like to go with Mike Evans in the draft, but Cam needs some proven veteran receivers to work with. I don't want Cam to be trap having to work with a rookie receiver next year.

2014 Mock Draft

(1st) Jason Verrett CB, TCU, 5’10” 178lbs
JasonVerrett2_zps839bd50c.jpg

Verrett is my favorite cornerback in this class and could easily leap over Bradley Roby as the projected no1 CB. The Senior CB almost quit playing football after RG3 picked him apart in his first game as a junior college transfer two years ago. Since then, Verrett have quickly positioned himself as a future potential 1st round pick. Verrett is a hard-hitting tackler, has great play recognition, closing speed, and tremendous ball skills (6 career INTs). Probably the best cover corner in this class, but also an asset in the run defense. Though, Verrett lacks the ideal size that NFL Scouts likes.

Captain, Florence, and Moore will probably all be gone after this season. The CB position is already and will be depleted next year. CB needs to be address! I dont see Gman taking the FA route to answer this question, so Verrett in the 1st would give us a lot of life at that position next year especially playing in the NFCS.

(2nd) Seantrel Henderson OT, Miami, 6’7” 342lbs

(RT #77 vs. Werner/Carradine)

A huge "steal" if we are able to land Henderson in the 2nd round of next year draft. This kid is massive and scouts/gms are going to love his upside once the draft comes. The former five star high school recruit out of Minnesota have somewhat disappointed in the college level. But, Henderson have appeared to show glances of promise to why he was such a highly coveted player with more comfortability. If Henderson can concentrate on football, he can become a very damn good NFL Tackle. Henderson could step in right away in replacement of Bell and be groom to take over Gross at the LT position.

(3rd) David Yankey OG/OT, Stanford, 6’5” 311lbs
DavidYankey1_zps06460db2.jpg

(LT #54)

An outstanding blocker at Stanford, Yankey has very good size, agility, balance, and toughness. Yankey can play inside or outside, but scouts feel that he is best suited at LG; currently playing LG. Maybe a possibility of moving Amini to RG. Our O-line would instantly be upgraded with the additions of Yankey and Henderson. The protection for Cam will be solidify for years to come.

(4th) DeVante Parker WR, Louisville, 6’2” 209lbs
DeVanteParker2_zpsa40f8b39.jpg

Any receivers not named Steve Smith will be a free agent. Ted Ginn should more than likely be retain due to his ST ability and production at receiver so far. DeVante Parker is already out to a fast start at Louisville. The 6'2'' receiver is a big play vertical threat and possess soft hands. He could potentially be taken higher than the 4th round.

(5th) Safety
(6th) OLB / RB
(7th) SF (Colin Jones trade)

2014-2015 Depth Chart

FB: Tolbert

Nice post Chuck!

As crazy as it sounds I wouldn't be surprised if PapaGetts keeps putting together secondaries from scaps and relies on the pass rush.

As such, I wouldnt be surprised if we didn't take a CB in the first 3 rounds.

Good research tho.

i wouldn't hate it, but i would re-sign lafell and munnerlynn and maybe florence (as long as he did what he did yesterday).

solid plan, tho.

I think LaFell has a food chance of being back due to little depth there after this season.

I'm not so sure of Florence and Capt. Florence will be another year older and Capt would again have to play on a 1yr deal. I don't think he'd want to do that. He's a very good nickel but I believe Thomas can fill that spot.

just like this year, most FAs will be taking one year deals because the money sure isn't going up and the market will be even more flooded because of all the guys who took one year deals this year.

even if florence is just serviceable, he's worth keeping around as depth and as a mentor. captain is just a solid player in the nickel. i don't want to mess that up. he'll sign another one year deal when he sees the market isn't so good.

btw, he and most guys who signed one year deals asked for them thinking that next year they would be better off. bad advice from agents, imo.

If Capt is willing to take another 1yr deal, keep him.

My preference would be to go OLine and take the best T or G available in the first.

You saw what a great D Line did for our patchwork DB's.

Always start with the trenches and everyone else benefits.

Basing on a great performance yesterday, I have faith that we can make the playoffs this season. With that said, we won't be positioned to take a Matthews/Kouandjio/Lewan. The two best OGs are Richardson and Jackson. We could very well go with either one and I would love it, but I'm not so sure Gman would wanna go with a Guard in the first. I would be thrilled if we can land Seantrel Henderson in the 2nd round. His upside is so huge and the talent is there. He pretty much dominated Bjoern Werner (2013 1st rounder) in the video I posted above.

And yes, we all saw what our Dline did yesterday for our patchwork DBs but do you really want to cross you fingers every week that it'll work. There's a problem at the cb position so mind as well "fix" it. I don't wanna act like there's no problem there hoping the Dline can make up for the lack of production.

    • So he became GM and decided not to address the weakness in the QB room following one of the worst rookie QB performances in NFL history?  There were options last season other than signing Dalton to a 2 year deal. Brissett and Jones by a wide margin, both of whom outplayed Bryce, Wilson, Winston, hell even Rivers off the couch was more exciting at the QB position. The time to address the failure in the QB room was last year but instead people on the Huddle cheered when we brought Dalton back then cheered when we were able to get anything for him after they finally realized he was washed up like a few of had been saying all along and got poo'd for even mentioning.  This year, the options were more limited obviously, especially since we lost Icky. It changed the dynamic of our draft. I think we were stuck this year keeping Bryce, but i still think giving him a 5th year option for what has amounted to replacement worthy performance was the wrong move. Why guarantee 25m if you're planning to replace him? You think he's going to want to be a bridge QB? Hell no. He's going to want out and we'll end up cutting him if he has another lackluster season because no one is trading for him with that price tag.  Were there better options as far as production available. A couple. Were there guys available with more physical tools than Bryce, Pickett or Grier, you damn well better believe there were. I've been saying all along, you always keep looking for your 1b. Bryce has yet to prove he can be a starter. Keep looking for someone who may. Put competition in camp. Let the best QB lead the team. Stop settling for less than mediocre.
    • Reasonable. I mean I didn’t see a clear path to relief this season myself. As I have typed already, I think the QB FA class is more interesting next season and that draft is supposed to be stacked as well. There just weren’t many options this year.  When you have Tepper to contend with you have to tread lightly around this unless you are 100% certain and willIng to stake your job on it.   There were a couple of outings that helped Bryce a lot in terms of  thinking maybe he can do this, and if you are a supporter you are giving them a lot of weight. You are likely to think just get him some more help and he can do that every week. Which I think Tepper falls into that category.  And the playoffs, division champs, regardless of the way I see that, the supporters will also give that a lot of weight.    And the big one, the atmosphere In BOA for that WC game, Tepper had to be soiling himself over that. If you pulled Bryce out right now you had better be right and your new guy had better make the playoffs and look good doing it or you will be gone and your chance to build your old team back into respectability will be gone too.  So here we have Pickett on a one year deal, and Grier and King. I understand it.
