Competency Trumps Continuity

Well, where is the continuity?  What part of this offense looks like Chud's offense?  The terminology may have remained the same, but nothing about this offense on the field looks like our previous offense.

So there has been NO continuity? Good grief wasn't that the entire point of keeping Shula? The entire point of this thread?

Yeah actually it does. I don't know what team you watch on Sundays. I'm seeing read options, I'm seeing zone reads and so forth and it's happening with the Carolina Panthers.

Tons of coaches wanting a shot to audition themselves as an OC.

This is such an invalid argument. Any time a coordinator position opens up, there are tons of people interested. The problem is the panthers were very focused in their search, mainly loser retreads. How about giving a young upstart a chance.

Needless to say I disagree. Sometimes not taking a promotion is the best step long term for a career. I've read where a OC or DC has declined an interview for a HC job because they didn't feel they were presented with an opportunity to succeed and given the tenuous between Rivera and JR, I know I wouldn't of had a warm fuzzy feeling about the job/opportunity myself.

I'm certainly not defending Shula as I felt it was a terrible choice but do you really think JR's phone was ringing off the hook for the position given his handling of Rivera and Fox. If you felt you only had one chance to show everyone what you could do, would you really have wanted to come here this year to prove it knowing that Rivera could be a fired at any time and with him, would go your one opportunity.

It might have been a money thing...since the team was in such bad shape financially after the 2012 season, he might have just mortgaged the season to see if Rivera could finally put it together while Gettleman cleaned up the cap so a new head coach to have some flexibility to bring in some of his own players.  Time will tell.

The Panthers have never been in bad shape financially. JR and partners continue to make a ton of money in spite of the poor product they have given us.

And you may not know this, but coaches don't count against the salary cap. Jerry's never had a problem spending on players. It's with coaches he seems to take the cheap route, and it seems to be a philosophical thing rather than just not wanting to spend the money.

So no, our "financial" situation had zero impact on the promotion of Shula.

    • Given that the immediate impact we need at edge. We almost certainly address that in Free agency, not in the draft. Same with Linebacker, unless Styles or Allen is still there at 19. I think the same for OT.  What is the position that we could draft in the 1st round and get immediate help in the first is how im approaching their decision-making  I know ill get dragged for this, but im thinking they go DT in the first. A guy that can play right away and be a complement to D.Brown to wreak havoc at the LOS.   So unless a top tier LB is there, I think DT will be the move.
    • I think people forget that by his last season Steve Smith had the ass and he played like it - and for no really good reason other than that other stars were emerging on the team and he didn't want to share the spot light.  He was more of a locker room distraction than he was worth. He went on to have great performances with the Ravens' but G-man made the right move allowing him to move on from here.  I personally think it was addition by subtraction and we don't have a super bowl run with Smith on the roster. Steve Smith remains a narcissist who I've never seen internalize his own culpability when it comes to his relationships with others - it's always somebody else's fault as to why he was forced to act like an asshole. This video is a product ad.  I'm cringed that either of these two Panther greats are party to it.
    • I think the ‘issue’ here is that we had two guys that clashed for several reasons. In some ways they were different, but in other ways they had a lot in common, and sadly they couldn’t see the forest for the trees. Sometimes when you have two people like that together they are either going to love or hate each other, and if it’s the latter, you need someone to mediate and hope the two individuals are capable of putting their differences aside for the common good. In this instance, they couldn’t find a way to move forwards together because I don’t think either guy wanted to play second fiddle to the other. This video basically said neither guy had the tools to bridge that gap and mend that fence, and perhaps also were unwilling to give an inch at that stage in their lives and careers. So a divorce, while unfortunate, was always likely. Do we win the Super Bowl with Smitty and Cam? Well, it’s one of life’s big what ifs for us Panthers fans.
