Yes, because Cam was a thug who didn't have the work ethic, or the IQ to lead an offense. 65 touchdowns in three seasons, only second to Dan Marino. Don't give me this sugarcoated bullshit about the media's criticism of Cam.

 

Casserly calls it like he sees it--Right or wrong, good or bad.  You are a bit sensitive about the media--for every reporter calling him a thug there was one singing his praises.  Your perspective might be the sugar-coated bullshit.

It's the guys like Casserly that consistently attacked his character as a person that really pissed me off. Cam made a few mistakes as a young man, just like damn near all of us. That does not provide grounds for running his reputation into the dirt. And that's exactly what Casserly and others of his ilk used their pulpit to do.

 

I see what you are saying and it pissed me off too, but Casserly was a GM and that is what they do.  It was interesting to hear the criticism before we drafted him because those mistakes were issues that could have developed into major problems later.  I am not as sensitive to the opinions of the press as some because I realize that many are trying to sell papers or boost ratings, but these were real concerns for Casserly, as they would have been Gettlemen.  The fact that he has changed positions suggests that he was wrong and admits it--heck, it is a crap shoot.

Casserly doesn't like QB's that have a different skin tone than he does, unless he is explicitly instructed do do so.  He is a POS.

 

So is Marc James.

The thing I like about Casserly is that he is a straight shooter.  I don't get mad at every opinion that is not like mine; Cam left him some things to consider that should have been discussed.  I do not recall anyone calling Cam a thug--if Casserly did, I missed that.  I hope and pray that Gettlemen is checking every possible character issue.  Casserly was just saying what GMs were thinking.  He mainly talks about risk more than the person.  A bad qb pick sets the team back years.  It is a huge decision.

 

People close to Cam knew what he was about and the Panthers checked his past thoroughly.  Casserly was not in that role or he would have had a different opinion.

 

But to say that he was wrong about the football IQ (not responding to your comment, Sig) is inaccurate.  Smitty just said that he went from checkers to chess. He was referring to the last few games.  Casserly saw a checkers player (like many college QBs) entering a chess tournament.

Not defending anyone, but when was the last time Richardson had a meeting with a potential first round pick? The character issues from his collegiate days would have been a concern for anyone. Obviously, this is a moot point now that Cam has been in the league for three years, but drafting a qb is a crap shoot. Look at what Leaf did to the Chargers, Russel did the the Raiders, or what Collins did to us. Character issues will always draw a red flag, especially for qb's.

i dont think less read option is bad. his designed runs help keep the defense honest and gives him better looks in the passing game

I think Jerry actually does it with all the top top top picks. Newton wasn't the first guy he's ever met before we drafted him.

 

But obviously having the #1 overall gives you more leeway without giving anything away to other teams.

I took the "checkers to chess" comment from Steve as a statement in regards to Cam's NFL career thus far, not just this season.

 

In regards to the "thug" label before the draft and after, I've never heard a white QB labeled that before so viciously. Anyone else?

I never saw Cam as someone deserving of the thug moniker. I did see him as another college quarterback that relied on athleticism that doesn't always equal NFL success. I thought he might need a few years to develop into a quarterback capable of running an NFL offense. The personal issues were something to keep in mind as well. However, hour has proven that all of these concerns were not an issue. After his first game, I was pleased that we drafted him.
