dunno I don't think your hypothesis is adequate to explain why there was an ESPN story about the Titans having a buncha terrible calls in their game, esp. given all the other terrible calls against bigger market teams they coulda focused on.

Officiating has been bad for several years now. I can't say for sure if it's worse this year, but some crews need to be let go. in a bad way

Pretty sure some of the calls yesterday prove the officiating this season is horrible.

The Cleveland "ghost" DPI call... The Benjarvus Green-Ellis over turned fumble call...

It's a joke.

DPI should be reviewable but idk what u do about refs screwing up reviews...

The NFL competition committee is considering a change to the instant replay review process.

With the NFL’s officiating function under siege, a key change could be looming.

Per a league source with knowledge of the situation, the Competition Committee’s annual offseason discussions regarding officiating have in recent years included a conversation about removing the instant replay function from the game site and transferring it to a central location — presumably to the league office in New York City.

That possibility is expected to be on the offseason agenda once again.

Good thread Mav... I've been thinking the same thing for several weeks now, and that's not even including the co troversial calls we may or may not have been involved in. But, even the Keek-Gronk call, regardless of where you stand on it, it should've been explained in the moment, not afterwards. I've seen the same thing happen in multiple games - a call is made, or not made, and no explanation is given, even if its blatantly wrong. Another example from our games was the Vernon Davis "non-fumble." Completely inexcusable. There are other examples that I can't think of right now, but while watching I was thinking the exact same thought - this has been the worst year of officiating I ever remember.

And as a lifelong NBA fan, that has been the biggest issue I've had with it... and this year reminds me so much of NBA officiating. I think in large part because all of the rules the NFL has been implementing over the last few years has pushed the officiating into NBA-levels of subjectivity. There's way too much play in calls. Personal fouls in football are now like calling blocks/charges in basketball.

It's horrible.

Every officiating squad should be subjected to a press conference immediately following every game to be questioned by the media. 

 

RIght now, refs have no accountability to the press or fans.  Mike Perrera was a good start.  I don't care if the press conference is as a-holish as a Belichek one, but just have one.

It's a combination of a couple things, I think.

1) the camera angles, as mentioned earlier. Easier to see blown calls.

2) game is faster than it has ever been. So much going on all over the field that it's tough for refs to keep up, I think. Need to get younger in the officiating department, I think. Some of the older, veteran guys just can't seem to follow the action as well. Which leads me to..

3) The rules. The rules have changed so much in just the past few years, let alone the past decade or so. Lines are becoming very hard to distinguish. A lot of the rules are dampening the game, for one reason or another. Then, to make it worse, you have refs not being clear on these rules, as some of them conflict with the rules that they might have been accustomed to before the changes. That leads to some flags being thrown and picked up (particularly for targeting penalties as well as PI, it seems).


I blame Goodell. The guy has made this league just atrocious. It's hard to watch a game if it's not the Panthers, really. Seeing bad calls and stupid rules being enforced when you are an objective viewer rather than a homer watching his team is just maddening. We need a new commissioner, but it will be a while before that happens. I get that they're trying to make the game safer, but come the hell on. It's football. Contact is supposed to happen, and when you make it unclear whether or not you can tackle a receiver who is in midair in the process of a catch (or WHERE you can hit him, as if you have a plethora of options for doing so effectively), it just takes away from the game entirely.

To be honest it does seem like there have been some crazy calls this year but it seems like more of the same to me.

Bring back replacement refs, it at least would give the nfl an excuse as to the amount of bad calls.

I was going to post the link to the central replay system. While I feel it would help get calls reviewed accurately, it still doesn't fix issues like bad PI (or no calls) that refs call due to the speed of the game or the way the rule book is written.

I didn't notice anything particularly egregious yesterday in any of the games.... first time in a couple of weeks.
