Ahh okay, thanks for clarifying.
-
I was wondering about that, but if it is about a QB, would that make sense?
-
so no to Cam then... I suppose this doesn't exclude a trade, right?
-
yeah for sure. He had his opportunities, even if he wasn't helped. I don't think he has a future as a franchise leader, which is all, ultimately, that matters. FWIW, his USC coaches were decent so it makes sense he'd have had success there. But I just don't think he was helped at NYJ or here. I still think he would have found a way to succeed, or at least show us much more, if he was going to. He just doesn't have it. edit: also good bit of research there. I think it does make clear how fuging terrible his NFL coaching has been, hahaha. Certainly good college coaching, and maybe that's the only reason he looked good in college.
-
Yeah I agree with basically all that. Hard to say if he loves the game - he is supposedly a good teammate, puts in the time, and does care about his play... its just the reality that doesn't always translate for people. But consistency?? It just isn't there for him in the pros. It is disappointing because even last season we'd see glimpses, but that just isn't enough. Frankly I think he hasn't ever had good coaching and I think its just too late for him now. He's done. Too much garbage between his ears, can't get out of his own way. The times he plays best are those magic moments where he's reacting, instead of thinking. That's not great tbh, and he just sucks when he has time because he can't read coverage for crap anymore. I don't like talking poorly about any Panthers players, but I'm honestly glad we have some other option than Darnold and PJ.

I dunno man, Darnold to me seems like a guy that just didn't transition and develop as people hoped. He was a fine college prospect, he has the physical tools. But he just never made that jump. Its hard to know if a guy will or not, and he wasn't the only QB from that class to massively disappoint. Darnold was the same guy he was in college, but plenty of guys develop / are coached up to be much better. That's what you count on when you draft someone - them developing to a ceiling, vs sitting where they are. I agree though with the second half - luckily we didn't really reach for a QB ... now, we go into this season with a vastly improved OL, a lot of excitement over a young QB prospect, and (imo most importantly, since I'm not high on Rhule) having both our first and second rounders.

What if Rhule turns out to be a really good just being a coach?
mav1234 replied to Fan01's topic in Carolina Panthers
what has he done to suggest he can be a good coach? It seems that once other teams have film on our players, our schemes fall apart, which tells me he's not a very good coach. I don't think I've seen a successful adjustment after the half at all, on any side of the ball, and our players frequently looked out of position. but sure, what if... then Tepper looks smarter than me. Of course, maybe whomever he hired instead would have been even better? who knows! -
CBS Sports gives Carolina a C- for the Draft
mav1234 replied to chknwing's topic in Carolina Panthers
how the fug. I'm not giving that poo clicks. there were no reaches, yes we had few picks, but we made the right selection in the top 10 and got a QB many had a first round grade on in the 3rd... what weird poo. -
Round 3 Pick 94: Panthers Select Matt Corral - QB Ole Miss

I like him. Definitely easy to root for. -
How upset were you with the Panthers 1st round pick?
mav1234 replied to kungfoodude's topic in Carolina Panthers
I can see that. Dalton had a stretch where he was far from just a backup. But he was never good enough to push that team over the hump. I think Pickett's ceiling is higher than Dalton's but I suck at evaluating talent, especially QBs. lol -

I don't know, I still think Pickett is probably much better than a #2, I just don't think he's someone that really carries a team. I don't see him as ever in the conversation for one of the top 5 guys in the league - and that is the kind of player I wanted as our QB. One thing I'll say... he did hit probably one of the best possible places to fall, all things considered. Willis, I really liked his potential, but... well, surprise, I'm not an NFL talent evaluator for a reason, lol. -
right. what has Rhule shown as at all in his 2 seasons? Yes, they get good seasons occasionally off of cast-aways (love Luvu), but the team itself has looked largely the same in both years: fast start, gets figured out, terrible losing slide where coaching staff looks completely overmatched. The defense has been smoke and mirrors, but maybe could be more steady this year (skeptical face)... the offense, though... lol. meh. We'll see. Hopefully you and I are wrong about Rhule.

Not upset at all. Was interesting to see how the draft shook out after all the speculation about multiple QBs going *before* we picked, haha. QB is still our biggest need but its not like I trust this shitshow of a coach to be capable of developing one, so I'm glad we got an OT that could in theory anchor the left side for a decade to come. -
Although I think Willis has the higher potential, I don't mind Pickett, and frankly after Tepper's comments I really don't even care what we do in the draft anymore.
-
the draft often feels like a crapshoot, but this measure appears completely worthless.

That is a bigger concern of mine, too. I'm petrified we're going to wake up to a big Jimmy G trade... I'd rather have a rookie, ANY rookie... McAdoo may be able to work with whatever rookie we draft, frankly, but I don't think it'll matter overall to saving Rhule. This team is not a QB away from competing, regardless. -
Yes. For a QB with a sky-high ceiling, you swing on it when you can. If you miss, you reload. If you don't have a QB, you don't compete in this league, and we can't seem to get a QB to come here any other way.

yeah it isn't easy to track down college stats beyond TD/INTs, tbh. sokay. I suck at QB evaluation and am fine admitting that, lol. -

Honestly its possible that the other fumble numbers are right but something doesn't add up. Because of the discrepancy I'd done some digging and had trouble finding anything definitive. Season by season breakdown, under Fox Sports' college football stats (for rushing) shows 26 total, which matches up to me with the 26 we see talked about elsewhere. https://www.foxsports.com/college-football/kenny-pickett-player-stats?category=rushing&seasonType=reg https://www.si.com/college/pittsburgh/news/pitt-kenny-pickett-hand-size-nfl-combine#:~:text=Pickett's hand size remains one, correlating to the smaller size. The 3 lines up with what the Fox Sports thing has... -

I think Pickett's ceiling is significantly higher than Jones' because of athleticism. I also think his arm strength is better but that's hard to evaluate (the relative difference in skill of the people they were throwing to and playing against makes it really hard for me to judge what I've seen of either of them LOL) Anyway these are their RAS profiles.. Kenny Pickett: -

Ehh, I've seen Pickett going in the top ten to other teams (like Atlanta) and to the Saints if he falls. Pickett is being scouted pretty heavily by other QB hungry teams, but his comparatively low ceiling I think means he's unlikely to go in the very top of the first unless we make the move. But I've consistently been wrong about QBs, so perhaps I'll be wrong here. He's significantly better than a third rounder. Honestly. The thing with him is that his elite traits are accuracy and anticipation (hence the comments about not having anything that isn't coachable), and he's just good to great in every other category. So he's a good prospect, but not the kind of guy that, even if he pans out, you expect to become one of the top 3 QBs in the NFL. I think folks believe Willis, however, has that kind of ceiling. OTOH, Pickett is likely to be, at worst, a very good backup. Willis has a lower floor than that. Who wants to spend #6 on a potential backup? Well, the Panthers. Haha. -

I just don't think his (Pickett's) ceiling is high enough to take him where we are likely to be drafting a QB. That's why I prefer Willis overall ... although man, his accuracy in actual games is not good. Even in the Senior Bowl, in the actual game, he just didn't connect with anyone... compared to some other prospects that had quite decent or good games. -

52 games (not starts - he didn't start every game his first year), 32 ints in 1674 passing attempts. ~1.9% interception rate would put him in good company in the NFL (for comparison, Darnold is at 3.2% on his career). In terms of fumbles, its impossible he had 26 fumbles lost unless the stats available online are wrong (possible, I suppose). Numbers available show 26 total fumbles, 10 lost. -

The fumble numbers are wrong, and have no context (that is, his numbers are no different from other QBs with larger hands, lol). Most numbers I've seen show 26 total fumbles and 10 lost (5 in his first full year as a starter, only 2 last year). Some have said the 26 total is from rushing, 38 is total. If this is true, it is *impossible* he lost 26 fumbles, hahaha. In this interpretation of those numbers, he lost only 10 rushing and this would mean he somehow lost 16 fumbles while passing despite only fumbling 12 times from the pocket/while passing.
